I have only seen the Martinez fights but he seems to have some good names on his resume. Was he a great fighter?
He was a breath of fresh air when he arrived on the scene and whooped up on Margarito. But he never really improved as a fighter during the time that i saw him. Stuck to high volume punching and relying on his chin. Still, legit wins over Martinez, Margarito, Quintana isn't bad. Would have been good to see him against some of the other big welters of the era e.g. Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto. Hell, even someone like Clottey.
At his best I'd say he was very good, maybe not great. He was an incredibly high volume puncher, combined with his tall height and long arms he was very dangerous. Watch his fight with Margarito.
Very good at his peak. Shame he didn't get that many big fights at 147. His problems were in his trainer and his manager who kept putting him in with southpaws who could counter fcuking dummies. He could have been something special had he not gone up to 160 and could have stayed between 154-147 where he would dwarf his opponents in the ring. With that said he could have been even better if he had learned how to fight tall behind a long jab he could have given people fits if he learned how to fight like that.
He was a good fighter with a lot of heart, and a fun style to watch. Beyond that, he was very flawed defensively, and lacked big power. He didn't exactly "whup up" on Margarito either. Marg came on late, and had Williams hurt in the later rounds, but Paul as always showed a lot of heart and fought back to win the fight. Anybody that thinks he could have challenged Floyd is off their rocker. Floyd would have schooled the **** outta Williams, exposing his weak defense and limited ring IQ. Prime Williams vs Canelo would have been a fun fight to watch, and yes, I can see Williams winning that one.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Williams could have never been something special. He simply wasn't that good. I'm sorry, but it's not his managements fault that he couldn't handle a 2nd rate fighter like Quintana. No "special" fighter would ever lose to Carlos Quintana.
williams was great vey akward i did not take to much intrest after the lara fight as it ****ed up my eighteen fight accumalator , tragic what happend fighters should aviod motor cycles at all cost imo good luck to paul hope he is happy with life
He destroyed Quintana in the rematch. The guy was more of a fighter than a boxer when it should have been the other way around given his natural size. You must be a hater? He would have been much better with a real trainer and management.
That margo vs Williams fight is very entertaining indeed, and I think marco just came on too late and lost by 1 or two rounds, I think he lost the last round bcus Williams took that otherwise could have been a draw, might go back and watch that actually
So because I'm critical of a fighter's true flaws I'm a "hater"? How old are you? 16? Tall Paul was what he was. Not every fighter has the ability to "box" just because of their height. I think he got the most outta what he had. He was tall, but he didn't have exceptional talent (i.e. speed, reflexes), so he fought the way he had to. I hardly hated Williams personally. But the way people often overrate him is annoying. He was a good fighter, nothing more. Not elite, and highly flawed.
always enjoyed watching williams fight due to his output. strange a guy of his nature did not rely much on his lenght or high though.. iron chin but did get cracked by martinez.
he was sick in the first fight. made no excuses. knocked quintana out cold in the rematch in the first round. he avenged that loss. he and sergio were avoided like the plague...actually if u notice...he fought a lot of ppl no one wanted to fight. walter matthysse (lucas' brother) undefeated with a perfect record 27-0 w/27ko's quintana twice margarito winky wright verno philips cintron sergio martinez twice it's worth noting that kelly pavlik ducked williams and chose to face martinez instead.
i scored it 8-4 and that was being generous. could have easily been 9-3. margarito did come on late but williams closed the show. the only ppl that thought that fight was close was butt hurt mexican fans and everyone at maxboxing who were pretty much personal friends of margarito and his management.
he was a very good fighter and (at least it seems) is a very good dude outta ring. what he was good at made up for what he wasnt good at. the man could care less about distance, using his height or keeping smaller much smaller/shorter guys on the end of a jab. but he made up for that with athleticism, relentless volume, a sturdy beard and a lot of heart. was hard not to root for the guy
