Palhares should be charged with criminal assault.

If you hold a submission after the opponent taps and/or after the referee calls for you to stop, OR if you strike a guy after the bell or after the referee has called for a stop of action, you should absolutely be charged with assault. That is a sure way to get these guys to stop doing this ****ing bull****.

You are no longer protected by the confines of the "sport". The "sport" ends when the bell sounds, or the ref says so or the opponent taps. Then you are just a normal person, attacking another person. :deal It's no different than me punching a guy in the stands, or walking up to some guy on the sidewalk and slapping a rear naked choke on him.

He's Banned permo from the ufc, source: Dana from twitter

edit:after reviewing the video , i think ppl are over exaggerating , the referee made contact with his shoulder and he released a sec later, the ref just tried to break the lock which made it look worst than it did, watch it yourself.

I just watched the fight.. This topic reminded me there was a fight night on. He held it longer than he should obviously, but I don't see the criminal charges here, or banned for life from the UFC...
Wasn't he suspended due to roids though recently? I wonder if he didn't test positive again, was let go, and they used this as a reason for him to save face?

Also to the TS it does happen that fighters hit eachother after the bell, hit on the break, etc. Some of them get caught up in the action and it isn't deliberate... Kind of like this case imo.

I bet the UFC lifts his ban in a year or so. They are taking a strong stance now, to look legitimate. They are still having trouble getting licensed in places (NY) and **** like this is horrible for them and can be used against them.

If this was the first time he'd been involved in such a situation: no problem. It was only held a bit longer and the ref actually got in the way so he may not have felt the tap. But he would have heard the verbal tap, and felt the ref trying to pull him off. Good riddance Palhares you disgusting POS. Mir got so much **** from Brazillians for breaking Big Nogs arm when he DIDN'T tap, this is much much worse and he is a repeat offender. Not a martial artists at all but a thug that doesn't care if he ends careers even after he has already got the win.

Palhares is borderline ******ed. There's something wrong with him, and we've seen that in nearly every fight he's been in. MAYBE it's for the best he's been banned, but you seem to be judging him as if he's a totally sane, compus mentus person who's out to deliberately hurt people. I'm no psychologist, but i don't need to be to see there's something not right with the guy

It may not have looked as bad, if you re-watch the video because if you time it from the moment the ref put his hands on both fighters, it was only a second or so.

However, keep in mind the ref is also verbally calling a stop before he gets there, so no matter how you slice it....he absolutely held on longer then necessary.

Palhares is a piece of ****. It's one thing to use dirty tactics to win a fight, but another thing entirely to attempt to intentionally injure fighters AFTER you've already won the fight. I doubt assault charges would happen - but it wouldn't be hard to justify either.

That guy is a piece of ****, and he needs to learn something OTHER than a ****ing heel hook.

BS, it looked that bad because there is no way he could have not seen the ref. Initially from the angle facing Palhares, I thought he couldnt see the ref (face turned down). But in the other angle, you can see that once the ref stepped in tapping on Palhares, he had eyesight to what was going on. It was pretty obvious the ref wanted it stopped and the fight had ended, yet Palhares was in his own world still cranking it. Perm ban is just what he deserves for pulling off this **** more than once.

Banning Palhares is not addressing the entire problem. Palhares is exposing a gaping hole in the mma rule set. You can't kick a downed opponent to the head. There is a reason that Brazilian's use to frown upon leg locks in submission only tournaments. Leg locks were considered less effective because your opponent can kick you in the face in a real fight. I'm not going to say that kicking someone in the face is 100% effective against leg locks, but I bet the threat of it happening would alter a fighter's approach.

Up kicks, and knees, from the bottom are not allowed if the opponent has a knee on the ground. This takes away a lot from the person fighting with the back on the ground.

Palhares is mean, and is ripping his opponent's knees on purpose. I just don't think he is doing it illegally. He ripped Pierce's knee after Pierce tapped the other night. Pierce tapped in time to avoid being hurt. The problem is that the fighter applying the submission is afforded the luxury of waiting for the ref to stop it. This is because numerous fighters have tapped and pretended not to. Palhares torqued Pierce's knee before the ref had time to separate them. If there is an injury, it had time to happen whether the ref broke the hold or not. That is what happened in the Drwal fight. Palhares could have held the sub even longer, and it wouldn't have mattered. The injury was done as soon as Drwal screamed, which is the moment he started tapping.

I understand that head stomps and soccer kicks look brutal. There still needs to be some sort of exception made once fighters are fighting with their backs on the ground.
