Orlando Cruz was profiled Thursday evening on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. It is scheduled to air again today, on both Good Morning America on Nightline. Props to Orlando for having the courage to come out. I believe gays should not be discriminated against, nor should they be mocked or otherwise treated badly. But I have a question: if Cruz were not gay, would they have him featured on ABC? Should gays be given preference over straight boxers? Why doesn't the ABC feature a GREAT Puerto Rican boxer like Miguel Cotto?
Because it's a story that transcends the boxing community. It happens; a lot of 'plucky underdogs' have received disproportionate coverage, same with otherwise mediocre boxers who pulled off enormous upsets, same with George Foreman because he was old or Butterbean because he was morbidly obese. In the music world, would Adele be given quite as much attention if she were a slim, black American girl? It's a shame that people have issues with something so inconsequential as a person's ***ual orientation, but until that goes away, a sportsman taking that step will get a lot of exposure, supporters and, sad to say, haters.
Your definiton of dime must differ from mine. Money's woman Miss Jackson is a dime. Melissa is some loose change.
Nah. Melissa has character. Chantal is like a Barbie doll. Too perfect and plastic looking. Girls like that are never as much fun as you think. (See: the Kardashian *** tape) Plus I like a little extra meat, and MG is round and curvy from cheekbones to hips.
I agree. Melissa is a pretty, sweet, very feminine woman who loves her husband. Ms Jackson seems shallow, and looks a bit like like a drag queen rather than a real woman.
Cruz should be the one featured. He's the first openly gay boxer and it's a huge story. I doubt they're claiming he;s the best fighter in the world but he's broken this barrier and deserves the attention that comes with it.
