Who gives a prime Ali nightmares?

Prime Ali could have moved for 25 rounds his fitness and stamina were phenomenal. I've no problem in anyone favouring Joe Louis over Ali though I think it would be post '70 Ali.
Although Louis has good footwork regarding his balance, and weight distribution, to unleash his power shots, he was mainly pretty slow on his feet.
I think the pre '68 Ali would be too fast for Joe and would clain a unanimous UD or late stoppage.

Holmes would not be able to decision prime Ali. Ali could do everything better than Holmes. Ali would out hit Larry for a clear decision win.

FRANENFRANK..could you give us a full outline of why you think Ali is over rated..and why you think some of the people around him were less than honest ? any specific examples would help our understanding. Also could you explain how you think other people have got it so wrong in thinking he was a great fighter...your long list of guys that you think would beat him clearly shows you dont rate him.
I am looking forward to your answer to this !!:

You have every right to believe he was the greatest and all, but let's stop making stupid statements like this. His stamina was great, but not phenomenal like you make it to be.

He isn't unbeatable. You're right. I think it's great that you're interested in the sport and your love for it shines through. I don't want to be too critical, but Louis' footwork is a big point in Ali's favor -- it is Ali's match to lose in the footwork department. Louis shuffles a bit, and though he's not as slow as he seems sometimes, he would definitely have a problem getting set vs Ali. He was a brilliant counterpuncher though, and Ali had some holes in his defense after punching where he relied on his reflexes, so whenever Louis is in range and set when Ali punches it is a dangerous ballgame.

But I wouldn't pick him as someone who is a nightmare for Ali per se. If anything, Ali matches up well stylistically with him.

Ali was arguably the hardest heavyweight to stop of all-time. Terrific will, a glutton for pain and amazing recuperative powers. If you're looking for a nightmare, look for someone who could outpoint him -- he is likely to deflate the knockout-artists.

You're looking for tall outboxers with an excellent outside game and short pressure fighters with tremendous workrate. Not Jersey Joe, Rock and Louis.

    Some well made points, Shake.
To be fair, the Ali-Louis fight is one I change my mind over depending on who's fights I
have watched most recently! The footwork could be an issue but so could Joe's accuracy.
Ali faced big punchers but not one as lethal as Louis with both hands.

He didn`t jab better and he didnt throw a better right cross. Holmes had more pop on both those punches. Holmes also punched to the body and had more variety to his attack.

Ali did move better and was a shade quicker. I dont disagree that Ali would win a decision in his prime. Probably a boring tactical fight.

Wrong. Prime Ali was much quicker than Larry...much better reflexes both hand and foot. Larry had the harder jab but Alis jab MUCH quicker and he could throw in with fluidity as he boxed side to side. Alis movement would allow him to hit Holmes at angles while Holmes punches miss or are slipped. Alis right hand again was much quicker than Holmes....he threw his right straight from the shoulder whereas Holmes tended to loop his right. Really can't compare the two...Ali did everything better. At one time I felt Holmes hit harder than Ali but I've spoken with Shavers and he told me Ali was the harder hitter...and he fought an old Ali. Norton was also on record saying Ali was the much harder puncher.

Interesting about Shavers and Norton's statements regarding Ali vs Holmes in terms of power...
