May I ask a serious question ? Is this your version of sounding out English or are you playing a role ? No disrespect , just truly curious as you are on the board a lot ... Thanks, HE
Mercer was seven years older than Bowe, a difference between a man and a kid at that point. It could just be Bowe's nervousness/anxiety as a kid may have gotten on Mercer's nerves. Though I get your point.
Bowe the contender was a fearsome fighter Bowe the Champion not as much. I think Larry Merchant said "the Underachieving overachiever" referring to his lack of dedication in between fights that allowed his weight to balloon. Even Eddie Futch got sick of his lack of preparation. But on the flipside in the ring he showed tremendous heart in all 3 Holy wars and the 2 Golota bouts. The beating he took in the second Golota fight, to continue to get up and fight back showed he all the courage in the world when the chips were down. Unfortunately you have to do the little things like stay in shape in between bouts to last long and become an ATG.
Not to put to go on too much of a tangent, but I was thinking about the whole Bowe/Newman WBC belt "trashing." I always thought it made Bowe look like he really was afraid/ducking Lennox Lewis, especially when you'd see the "trashing" clip followed by Bowe's "thrashing" at the hands of Lewis in the amateurs. I assume it was Newman's idea to publicly trash the belt, but what was he hoping to accomplish? How could this make his fighter look any better? There were other options available -- make WBC strip you and then claim that you couldn't make a deal on the fight...might save a little face there, instead the way it was done made it look like they were afraid of Lewis moreso than being against the WBC. Just trying to picture their scheme-ing and what made them think THAT was the best course for action.
I did cover this in a previous thread, its mentioned in Tysons book. Bowe dumped the belt in the bin to get back at the WBC who were looking to charge him extorniate amounts of money to sanction a fight. He did not do it to duck Lewis. Lewis team took full advantage of this and basically spread the rumour that Bowe was ducking him. Oviously Bowe and Lewis didnt fight and that makes Bowe look like the guilty party. I believe the whole Lewis was ducked is overstated. Lewis has one of the best resumes ever at hwy. You cant be ducked by everyone and clear out your division at the same time, it doesnt make sense. Mercer, Bruno, Morrison, Mcall, Akinwande had no problem fighting Lewis, but apparently Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe were **** scared of him?
He had the ability to be one of the best. Unfortunately he lacked the discipline. His hunger was for food !!
FrAnkenfrank..Sounding out english...wots that mean ? never heard the phrase.. also could you explain how you rate Akinwande highly. ? ( my understanding is that you rate him highly) did u see him v Lennox ?
Thanks for the information. I don't know that I was aware of the backround -- it doesn't help that I really disliked Newman, generally ok with Bowe at the time...except the whole Rock Newman part...so I may have bought whatever was being fed to me. Which Tyson book?
The whole belt dumping thing was orchestrated by Newman so he could make Bowe look like some sort of martyr, icon, hero and try to make him the next Ali (standing up to the establishment etc etc), unfortunatley it backfired and made Bowe look like he was ducking Lewis. Newman also took Bowe to visit Tyson in prison, he was trying or set up a fight between the 2. The book does not mention what happened at this negotiation, but accoridng to Bowe, both men agreed not to fight each other as they were from the same neighbourhood The book also descibes Bowe as Tysons 'Brownsville chum', not sure how close their friendship was. You can see Bowe cheering Tyson on at the Razor Ruddock fight weigh in and Tyson flashes him a hand sign. And after the first Holyfield fight, Bowe says he dedicated the fight to Tyson who was a great inspiration and told him to come home soon (because Tyson was in prison) The book i got the info from is Tysons autobiography by Peter Heller. It basically described the hwy scene before Tysons release and what was going on. Bowe was being messed about by the sanctioning bodies for not paying up, people like Seldon and Tucker were ranked higher than Bowe, hence why Bowe was pissed off and ended up following the WBO path
"I did not dump the WBC belt in order to duck the WBC's number one ranked contender who just happens to be the guy who knocked me out in the Olympics! Why on earth would you think that?" --- Riddick Bowe If Rock Newman was ONLY trying to get back at the alphabet boys, he could have had Bowe dump all the belts and sign a contract with Lewis for non-alphabet sanctioned heavyweight fight at 12, or even better, 15 rounds. If the WB-whatever tried to claim someone else as champion, they'd have been a laughingstock
