Surely this has been done before or maybe it's even being done as we speak. Most people agree that the state of boxing is not what it should be. Could a FRBO be the answer to any of boxings problems? Way I see it the best way to get something like that going would be for a bunch of fans to get intouch with eachother through email and then through those emails the structure, role, laws and other things regarding the organization would be decided. I think that a boxing organization of this type should start by naming champions and then name the top ten challengers to their crowns. It shouldn't be hard for an organization like this to quickly become more respected than the other small organizations. An organization like this could get its strength from its numbers. The number of active members participating in its operation.
Such an organisation wouldn't gain actual power if the promoters continue to buy garbage titles from the alphabet groups. Not the right first step for significant reform. I think reform of rankings and championships would be most effective if it came from regulatory commissions. Maybe a new commission that refused to acknowledge alphabet titles and made their own rankings and championships, which any promoters they sanctioned fights for would have to accept. Then if this commission superceded existing national commissions it could become a universal governing body, and boxing could be governed like a proper sport. Obviously this is almost impossible considering how established the current structure is, and how little will for reform there is from the existing powers that be.
Good idea, but the crooks who control boxing will never allow it, example; Wilder is ranked #3 WBC, #6 WBA and #12 IBF without ever fighting one ranked opponent! How did that happen?!
The power of a boxing organization is granted to it by boxing fans and how prestigious they think holding it's championship is. Promoters buy their fighters championships from boxing organizations to increase their fighters market value to make more money. A fighter holds onto a championship in order to say that he is the champion and nobody else. An organization like this would have to start by just basically being a big ranking committee. It could also adopt resolutions I suppose. But yes an organization like this would basically achieve notability when some fighter who would be named champion by it would be fed up with the ABC's and start wearing this organizations championship. But yeah these existing organizations they are not worth the paper that they are printed on really. They're practically privately owned and operated for profit organizations.
The thing is that the crooks who control boxing would have no say in the matter. Who can prohibit people from creating a website and exchanging emails? Lets say that this theoretical organization that I am talking about were to some day have 10.000 members. How could boxers and promoters ignore it in favor of a for profit privately owned and operated outfit like the WBC?
Hell. Instead of just talking about it lets see if we can't get the ball rolling. If I can get 12 private messages from members of this forum with their email addresses then I'll send out emails to those members and we'll see if we can't help make boxing a better sport together. What are we talking about here? A sanctioning body like the ABCs would require a lotta funding and the backing of at least some of the pro fighters / managers and promoters. A body like the TBRB which is essentially a ranking organisation run by boxing experts and writers would be feasible but is (obviously) already being done. The TBRB has already in it's 1 year of existance gained considerable support from the boxing community and fans, and could, feasibly, in the future develop into something more. Perhaps putting your support into the TBRB and lobbying for it to be used as a guideline in fight matching would be a more productive exercise than trying to start from scratch? Perhaps they could start handing out there own belts? Donations anyone.....?
TRBR has no plans to hand out belts. There are altogether too many belts already. What the TBRB does is recognise existing linear champs, and try to recognise new ones on behalf of and with the support of boxing fans. That said, thanks for the kind words Koba. I'm a member of the TBRB and nobody is more surprised than me at the early support and enthusiasm.
Since when has any organisation paid attention to anything but their own interests? They operate as a recognised sannctioned corporation,in it to make money and supported by TV,boxing promoters and a fan base, untouched by Govt. restrictions.Forget it boys, unless someone has a **** load of money they are prepared to lose.:deal
I was kinda joking bout the belts, but it would be nice to imagine that the TBRB could be seen as a kinda guide to which fights are meaningful, perhaps gaining the prestige that The Ring rankings once had in the eyes of the boxing community. Thanks to you and the rest of the TBRB crew BTW, excellent job. Just outta curiousity is there any plans to expand the range of your rankings (maybe to a top 20 or 30) or is the work involved prohibitive?
