I've never seen this before. Papke just uppercuts Carpentier to death. Just shreds him. Looks like a blood splash hits the canvas when Carp goes to a knee. Papke just too much for him. Carp later claimed Papke gave him the worst beating of his career. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3BCGto6fjc If the link doesn't show, just go to Youtube and type in the fighter's names.
Papke was a stone-cold ****ing killer, man. He also looks significanly better here than in the Ketchel footage. Never seen this, thanks.
Wow, this Papke was a helluva strong puncher with enormous stamina to be so strong in the 17th round...Great clear film , but the hand cranked camera isn't in full time....I am convinced after seeing this film of Papke that the oldtimers were every bit as good as the old boxing writers reported they were...And get this folks, Georges Carpentier was only Eighteen years old at the time of this fight, going into the 18th round with the likes of a Billy Papke !
Frank Klaus said if given a choice he'd rather fight Ketchel again than Papke. Papke was vicious, could box and slug and could go all night. He had no glaring weaknesses as a fighter that I'm aware of.
Yeah, Papke was just violent. And a psychopath. With an inferiority complex. He's amongst the most terrifying ever I think.
Good quality footage Papke was a beast! Carpentier gets quite a bit of flak nowadays, but he showed great heart here imo.
I dont think Carpentier's heart is the question. I think his complete predictability and lack of a plan B in light of being completely overhyped in his time and overrated today is the problem. I have several more rounds of this fight and its all the same. Its just like the Klaus fight where he was manhandled throughout. BTW, the guy training with Papke is Jeff Smith.
This kid had been fighting professionally for four years and was claiming to be the middleweight champion. His style does not change one bit from this fight to the last filmed fight we have of him against Tunney 12 years later. You cant go around claiming to be a phenom and the best fighter in the world and then when you get hammered in a one sided ass whipping suddenly do a 180 and say you lost because you were young. You cant say age was a factor when his style and ability didnt change over the course of his career. I wouldnt pick a 1921 version of Carpentier to beat this Papke. Why would you? He looks exactly the same.
I really like the fast and consistent pace Papke set, calmly working the body and head with nice uppercuts. This is impressive given that we are watching the 17th and 18th rounds. He was gradually breaking down Carpentier, who seemed to be in survival mode at that point, mostly clinching. I think Georges retired in the corner because he knew he was done.
