At the time the top dogs at Welter were (Judah, Spinks, Baldomir, Margarito) Spinks lost the Undisputed title to Judah, Judah lost it to Baldomir, Mayweather in 3 fights at welter beat the last two true Undisputed champs at the weight. Margarito a Career welter and title holders didn't take part in any legitimate Welter title fight between 95-07.

As far as him retiring though I would have liked him to fight on. Beating The last 2 Undisputed champs at WW, an ATG an #1 rated WBC champ in your fifth division, and a P4P Unbeaten Undisputed champ from JWW. Is a good way to go out.

In all seriousness are we really going to fault him because Mosley said he had a toothace, and Cotto said he was not ready.
