Has Hopkins earnt the right to fight who he wants?

Why say that about Hopkins?? That scenario fits Mayweather jr, Calzaghe & Jones jr among others, Why aren't you castigating them??? Line em up & the Alien will put them downatsch

 

Yeah it's fine to fight who you want if you're not champion but if you're champion you should have to fight the best challenger available.

 

Every fighter can fight whoever they can arrange to fight. They're trying to make a living and like anybody else, are going to direct their career toward whatever situation most satisfies them.

As fans that ultimately pay for it all, we're going to ***** about some of their choices, or not and they will pay attention, or not.

For my part, Hopkins has pretty much carte blanche at this point and I'm gonna' like him.

 

I'm not saying it about Hopkins. I'm saying it about the concept of him or any fighter being able to fight who they want when they are competing for world titles.

The thread asked has Hopkins earned the right to fight who he wants and my reply was no, he hasn't because it shouldn't be the case that any fighter in the world rankings can do that. That includes the guys you named as well.

Bhops a first ballot HOFer and an ATG for my money. It's unlikely anything he could do at this point would change that.

In addition, he can make voluntary defences 'gainst whoever he wants. So long as he fights his mandos I guess that's fair enough. I doubt I'll bother to watch them however, and he runs the risk of becoming an irrelevance if he doesn't face the top names of the division, but no-one can compel him to fight the young turks at 175.

 

He needs to fight Kovalev or Stevenson or retire. There are not any other fights for him. Won't matter as he would turn both of those fight that SHOULD be exciting into boring stinkfests with his holding, clinching, grabbing, wrestling, and faking low blows and people on here will call it 'crafty' and 'veteran' way of fighting. :rofl

 

Murat was his mandatory and Hopkins signed to fight him. Then Murat had trouble getting a visa and the fight was cancelled. Then Kovalev was installed as his new mandatory and Hopkins said he would fight him, but Kovalev opted instead to fight Cleverly.

To answer the question, yes, Hopkins does have the right to fight who he wants, but it wasn't something he had to earn. He has to fight his mandatory challengers in order to keep his belt, but he's certainly free to fight whoever he wants (provided they'll fight him) or nobody for that matter.
