I just knew you would show up, and torment me ;-) Hence the overrated claim! People fall in love with power, and give it a higher notoriety than skillfull boxing in many cases. Jeff Chandlers record for example (most underrated when that thread topic comes up), held the belt longer, had a better championship ranking, was actually considered THE Bantam champ (something Zarate was not willing to risk!), and fought twice as many ranked fighters as zarate, with...gasp...a better record! I like Zarate, but he is no top 5 bantam!
Zarate was willing to risk the title, the wbc wasnt. He went Undefeated at 118, beat the other champ easily, and (imo) beat hus succesor. His only loss in his first 51 fights was to an ATG in his opponents backyard in which he was fouled like a Pennsylvania River. After his retirement he was considered the greatest bantamweight ever. If anything he is underrated.
In ATG terms it must be CLEVELAND BIG CAT WILLIAMS. Used unfairly to boost the resume of Sonny Liston beyond all proportion in a way only Luis Firpo could be proud....
Stellar amateurs. Genuine world champions. Recognised as #1 at their weights (CW/LWW) during prime. Multiple titlists...
Heavyweight: Lennox Lewis, possibly Pinklon Thomas. Non-Heavyweight: Wilfredo Gomez, possibly Roberto Duran.
Heavyweight, have to go with Dempsey. Great celebrity, overrated fighter. Below, probably Chris Eubank. Just don't see what was special about him. Sammy Angott seems to get more love than merited, also.
Some general observations. The fighters who are rated in a given era, tend to reflect the champion and division at the time. For example Rocky Marcaino looked a lot more credible when Mike Tyson was champion, then he does when Wladimir Klitschko is champion. Punchers and fighters with aesthetically pleasing styles, generally tend to get over rated, especially when there is an abundance of available footage. Gery C00ney and David Tua are recent examples of this.
