An undefeated world champion who didn't fulfil his potential or an over achiever? Anyone able to give me the lowdown on him? Seems like a waste talent...
He was a good fighter. It's hard to judge him really for me. I was impressed when he beat Clinton McKenzie because I rated McKenzie as a good fighter. I was familiar with Joe Manley when he fought him, I don't know if he did anything afterwards. He beat that Japanese fella I've forgot his name was it Akio Kameda. I knew of him at the time but thought his best years were behind him and he didn't to anything afterwards either. After that he was trying to get a fight with Hector Camacho which would of been at good gauge at the top level and it looked a possibility. Next thing you know he's got diabetes or something his career is over.
Cheers. My dad really rated him and thought he had a chance against the likes of Camacho but he's biased because he knows him so I took it with a pinch of salt but I was interested to see how others remembered him. Seems like a Paul Spadafora situation but for different reasons.
He quit because he knew Frankie W was going to beat him. Then Frankie goes and loses to Buddy... Oh wait, I think you are talking about something else; allegedly!
I remember him as having two outstanding qualities as a boxer. 1. Amazing fitness 2. Amazing lack of a punch On a personal level he always struck me as a very 'strong' person, very mentally tough and very intelligent. Seem to remember he spent some time in jail..."on remand " I think they called it....basically internment without trial...waiting for his case to be heard...seem to remember the judge threw the case against him out as soon as he saw the lack of evidence against marsh??but not before TM spent I think about a year in a cell????? I always found that extraordinary, how that could be done to a citizen in a modern Western European democracy.... It was all a long time ago...anybody have an update on TM today?
His story is more intriguing outside of the ring..former marine turned boxer....champion attempted murder charge. .political candidate. .....most recently a trader in the city.
Yes will always be more remembered for the allegations outside of the ring. Strong & fit with combining being a fireman as well as a boxer mentally very tough.
Great fighter! Legend! Khan & Hatton would be shining his world title belt! They'd be unheard of if in the same era!
