36-0, 29 inside the distance. How did you rate him? I remember he appeared on the cover, sure it was ring magazine, where he was billed as the next big thing in the HW division but he never lived up to it. Out of the 36 fights, he never really beat many of note. A win over Monte Barrett was probably the highlight... he beat Rahman as an amateur as well. Remember his fight with Jirov, he won that in a close decision on the score cards... if that fight was a 12 rounder he would have been lucky to have lasted it.
Fraudley and Guinn were also featured on that very same cover :rofl Mesi maybe had something to offer but he wasted away and eventually retired. lets hope Boystov doesn't end his career like Mesi did, not looking good...
It seemed like the contender level was about his ceiling, but he wasn't championship material. He also did ice Williamson in 1.
He was FORCE to retired. Jirov lost the fight but in a sick way, won the war. He got a brain bleed, and was done.
If John Ruiz could be champ I'm sure Joe Mesi had a shot, especially at that time period. I just think his brain injury finished him. It's the same situation with Jermaine Taylor. I think he had the skill to be a champion at the time but he was unlucky.
Had a great amateur background and did reach # 1 contender ranking by WBC so he was legit. Shame the health problem took place as I was looking forward to seeing his fight game evolve.
I remember that fight very well. Mesi was well ahead after having landed so many good combinations but suffered KD's late in the match. Very glad he fully recovered.
I liked Mesi but the stuggles vs Barret and Jirov to me show he wasnt getting much further. I think he was in line for Vitali during Vitali's first WBC run
Please explain how Ruiz would have KOed him? Ruiz had no power and didn't KO anyone. Maybe you meant hugged him to death?
He was Ok but he got a few good breaks I remember him blasting through TOS . and TOS gave Klit Hell before the fight was stopped on a butt.
Decent boxer, though a bit overrated due to his record... I agree his win over TOS looked spectacular, especially at that time... then the fights with Barrett and Jirov showed his issues. In retrospect I am happy Jirov retired him (in the sense of fighting real opposition). If a fight with Jirov had this effect, a sadist (I mean boxing style, not personality) like Vitali could give him permanent damage.
