Yes Floyd got the tko. Yes Hatton ended the night on his back.
But as the author of the "Floyd Mayweather: a Legacy In Retreat" thread, it is on this night that I will praise his evasiveness - just once - and pertaining to the final seconds of this fight. For when he landed the check hook, Hatton would've fallen right into him with his foreward momentem, but no. Mayweather zipped out of the way, leaving hattons head to plow into the ring post like a battering ram at a high velocity. If not for this, Hatton would not've been so groggy when he got up, and probably would not have been so vulnerable. In the slow motion, you can actually see the torque of the impact ripple through his body. Hats off to Mayweather - his quickness allowed his opponent to knock himself out.
But enough of that. This post is about Joe Cortez.
On this night -it seemed obvious to me- Cortez entered the fight with specific directions: keep this guy off of Floyd no matter what. I'm betting any amount of money those directives came from the Man himself, Al Haymon.
This fight was...odd. Even the H.B.O. commentators were a little perplexed by Cortez' behavior. I just listened to the audio of the fight on headphones on my mp3, and something came very obvious that I missed when watching the fight: audio-wise, Cortez' constant yapping and admonsihing (intervening) was more prominent and obtrusive than the H.B.O. commentary.
This spells one thing: a ref on a specific mission to take control away from the fighters (or at least one fighter). Cortez' yelling seemed nonstop. But then, round five, it dissapeared, and this is the round where Mayweather began to really assert himself. No coincidence there.
Round 6 (if memory serves) Hatton rushed in while landing a clean overhand right. A fraction of a second his upper body collided with Mayweather as a result of the punches foreward momentum, Cortez was there quicker than lightening - so quick that Hatton didn't even have time to tie up his opponnent - about 1/2 a second. Cortez saw how effective this punch was too, and had to bring a quick halt to any damage Hatton was about to do.
Even in Mayweather's corner, his uncle kept telling him 'potshot'. Cortez seems to have gotten those same directions (from Al Haymon): keep hatton [with his 6-inch arm length disadvantage] at a range where only Mayweahter's potshots will connect, and Cortez faithfully obliged.
"ive never seen Joe Cortez this involved in a fight", lamented one of the H.B.O. commentators.
'involved' was right. I mostly agreed with the H.B.O. scoring of this fight through round 6, but with a slight difference. In the 2 rounds they gave to Mayweather, I had it 10-9 (Mayweather) in those 2 rounds, and, because Joe Cortez was making so much contact in this fight, I also scored those 2 rounds 10-9 for Joe Cortez. So all told, the points total scored against Hatton in those 2 rounds was 40-18 (Mayweather/Cortez). You'll get scores like that when you got 2 opponents against one.

Rigged, fixed fight by the omniprescent Al Haymon, protecting his super-investment from a credible threat.
No fault to Mayweather per se, he was just 'in good hands' on this night.

forcing Hatton to fight out of his natural division helped a lot

    fighters Mayweather has ducked:

    Pacquiao
    Margarito
    prime Cotto
    Kostya Tzyu
    Paul Williams
    Hatton at 140
    etc

Cortez definitely didn't allow anything to go on in the clinch. Hatton's footspeed really made Floyd uncomfortable early in the fight. Floyd had to dig deep to get this one. I think Floyd wins no matter how Cortez refs it but it would've been fun to see a fight where Hatton was allowed to work inside.

As you've just contradicted yourself saying no one forced Hatton to fight at 147 a weight he had fought at before.

Floyd certainly assisted by "Firm but not Fair on the night" Joe... but the best man did win the fight.

I saw that fight and thought Cortez was overly protective of mayweather -as is the case in nearly all of his fights- and hatton became increasingly frustrated. it ruined the fight IMO

Cortez main job in that fight was to stop Hatton from fighting & take away any chance he had of winning the fight. The crowning moment was when Hatton complained about Floyd continually ducking below the waist line < a foul> All Cortez said was Now don't hit him while he's down there Ricky. It was like pro wrastlin

Firm but not fair wanted Hatton to do nothing but box with Floyd, how the **** is somebody like Hatton going beat Floyd boxing :patsch. You got Hatton who's an inside fighter that's going to try to get in and work the body and Floyd who's a boxer from the outside. Firm but not fair wanted nothing on the inside .
