DiBella & Arum will make Cotto-Martinez... but on PPV, really?

Unless Martinez has lost it completely, I don't sees how Cotto wins. He doesn't hold one phyical advantage that I can see.

 

I also find it difficult to find any distinct physical advantages for Cotto going into this one. Now with that said Cotto usually experiences difficulty with larger pressure fighters and extreme movers, Martinez has surely lost a step and keeping his hands low vs Cotto won't help his cause as I can see Cotto's left jab shotgunning into his face more than it should. Martinez doesnt move like Trout and he's far from a pressure fighter, he's a natural athlete that depends heavily on his fast twictch abilites and as we all know these sort of fighters can grow old overnight. The match up seems intriguing to say the least.

 

gbp knows a lot of them chi/mehicanos are not going to pay and watch one of their own who just got embarrassed on his last fight and first ppv.

 

Cotto vs Martinez at 157 to 160 lbs, Martinez is not a big Middleweight and can fight at Jr middle so at 158lbs could be better for him. If Cotto manage to win very unlikely, move down at Jr middle and fight Canelo for the IBF title if Canelo manage to fight and beat Molina (that's another possible Canelo opponent being discussed). Cotto has no business at 160lbs and His only change is to beat a small faded middleweight in Martinez all the others good names are strong big middleweights.

 

Not a huge fan of this fight, I think Martinez is a huge favorite even with the layoff and injuries.

I get that this would be a ppv fight, it would do pretty good business and would be an expensive fight for regualr HBO.

I just don't like the number of ppvs already being lined up for 2014. You have Alvarez with 3, Mayweather and Pacquaio will probably get 2 each and then this-thats 8 already.

That doesn't count possible ppvs for guys like Broner, Chavez, Marquez, etc, you could be looking at close to a ppv a month at this rate.

 

Canelo's people have already backed off their goal of 3 PPV and said it's probably 2,but without Martinez and Cotto,it's a long shot that he will get even 2.Mayweather is locked in for 2 and Broner isn't primed to headline a PPV yet,even GBP and Showtime know that-unless it's on a stacked championship card.
HBO will probably do 3 or4 during the year and that depends on Pacman beating Rios.In total I would guess there will be 6-7 boxing PPV's at best for 2014.:deal

 

A lot is still up in the air and it could get close to 6-7 ppvs and I wouldn't be shocked to see Alvarez fight atleast once on regular Showtime.

Unless something major happens you still have Mayweather, Pac, and Alvarez(even with 2 instead of 3 ppvs) getting 6 ppv's right there.

Martinez-Cotto is looking more likely and it would be ppv so barring injuries, retirement, etc we already are looking at 7 fights that are probably locked in for ppv next year.

Yeah, us fans know Broner isn't a ppv headliner yet but GBP was looking at doing his fight with Maidana on ppv so if he picks up another win or two over top guys like Maidana then next year at this time GBP could be right back to looking at him as a ppv guy.

Chavez could wind up on ppv especially if its a Martinez rematch and it seems Bradley-JMM made a decent profit so a rematch could wind up there as well.

A lot of speculation at this point and a lot of things will change but I'm not crazy about a number of fights already being considered for ppv in 2014.

 

GBP PULLED THAT POWER move they offerd 10 mil for canelo vs cotto. martinez will fight rubio. in march. which will set up Mayweather vs Martinez in Sept. Gbp sho and haymon know what they're doing hbo either has to pick ul martinez vs rubio or pass either way his time with hbo is over

 

GBP was just posturing. The Canelo fight will always be on the table. It's not a take it now or leave it type of deal. Logically, Cotto can make history and fight Martinez for the MW title. Win or lose, the Canelo fight will still be on the table and it will still be a huge fight.

That is as simple as it gets and is not very hard to understand.

 

Assuming Canelo wins his next fight, he should fight the winner

 

The Canelo fight may always be on the table but the $10 million sure as hell won't be in the event of a loss.

 

That's an assumption. A Cotto/Canelo fight will always be huge. The PR/Mexican rivalry is a sure seller every time.

 

It may always be huge but it certainly won't be as huge for Cotto himself. It's absurd to expect Cotto to get anywhere near the same amount of money if his positive momentum is again halted.

 

Why not PPV?

Cotto has raised his stock considerably in the last two years. After the Pacquiao loss he was damaged goods and viewed as being all washed up at the main event level. Since then, with the Mayorga, D-Rod, and Margarito II stoppages and the respectable showing with PBF, weighted against the Austin Trout loss as the only real negative, he is once more a player.

Martinez is still the champ, and merits a PPV date with anyone even vaguely reputable. Cotto more than measures up.

 

If Ward Chavez can get made for 2014 then that fight is a lock for PPV. However, the realist in me says no way in hell does Arum feed Chavez to Ward...
