Yeah Dempsey Willard has always pretty much been the acknowledged standard for beatings in the ring

And what people dont talk about enough is no neutral corner..Dempsey just learing over him waiting for the second Willard rose to just brutalize him even more...But He did keep gettin up..dont know why though!:huh

Yes it's Dempsey v Williard for me. I don't believe any heavyweight has been brutalised as bad in a championship fight as Williard was.
It also showed that while Williard wasn't one of the best heavyweights ever he certainly showed he was one of the bravest.

Gunboat Smith told how tough Willard was.....something to the effect that he hit Wilard with a "right hand that nearly ripped his ear off and the guy kept coming."

I have no particular admiration for Yank Heavyweights (Lennox Lewis easily beats any of them, including Ali ) but I'm led to believe what made Howard Cosell turn his back on boxing was the disgraceful televised beating of Tex Cobb, by the far superior Larry Holmes.

Dempsey v Willard is the benchmark I believe.

Jeffries absorbed a terrific beating in his winning defence against Fitzsimmons.
Gus Ruhlin was battered remorseleesly by Fitz ,so badly was he concussed that he had to be put to bed in the arena,[ MSG ,]as it was deemed unsafe for health reasons to move him. He spent the rest of the week recuperating at his manager's house.

Randy Cobb sustained a one sided scientific beating from Larry Holmes ,as did Shannon Briggs from Vitali.
I thought the Terrell Ali fight could have been stopped, and that the excellent Arthur Mercante was late in stopping the Foreman v Frazier debacle.
