I scored Doug Jones vs Muhammad Ali yesterday...

    I scored it 5 rounds to 3 for Doug Jones with 2 rounds even.
    My scorecard:

    Doug Jones fought excellent the whole fight but got tired in the last rounds. In the 7th and 8th he was still keeping it even but then Ali finished strong in the last 2 rounds.
    But apart from the last 2 rounds, there was not a single round Ali really won in my opinion and even the 3rd (which I gave to Ali) was pretty close.

    I had it quite like you, with the first round being a 10:8 in favor of Jones due to only the ropes keeping Ali upright in it.

    Sure thing is that Ali never won against this smaller man either.

    Close hard to score fight. Louis, Dempsey ....every hwt champion had fights like these.

    This is a fun fight. George Chuvalo speaks well about this fight, like he does most things. He says it is interesting the way "Ali, then Clay" didn't really run in this fight, that he fought Jones's fight, that he left himself open to that counter-right. I thought his best counter-punch was a sneak right hand to the body, but it didn't seem to bother Ali at all like the right upstairs did in 1 and 8, so probably that's a fair shout by George.

    What I don't understand is why Ali is allowed to fight a more stationary fight, probably a good plan against a smaller, slower fighter but then doesn't sit down on his punches like we would see him do the following year, and had seemed to see him do before. Maybe I am being a little unfair there as it's possible he needs the poundage he would gain (202) to hurt a really durable opponet, but he o nly really hurt Jones on accumilation and in the last round.

    The other thing was how ordinary Jones's head-movement made the Ali jab look. I have next to zero sympathy for those who try to structure an argument for Liston beating Ali at his best, but if there is one it is in this fight. Little ducks, usualy to his own left, allowed Jones to slip a lot of Ali left jabs. Then, just to complete the you're-not-in-Kansas sensation you get seeing Ali miss with the jab, economise with his footwork, Ali turns on the best hooking performance of his career. I mean he hits Jones with a lot of hooks here, lots of different types, lunges, counter-hooks. He also tosses in a couple of uppercuts.

    Although Jones had some success, started well and had the crowd roaring every time he so much as flicked out a half landed jab, I can't see the fight as that controversial. The individual rounds are often quite close and a couple of times I was flat out praying for something clean in the final seconds to seperate them, but Ali is throwing more and landing more. Although some of his shots are glancing blows he is mixing them up with enough solidly landed punches to take stretches. Only that extraordinary rally Jones pulled off in the 8th kept him in the fight for me, as that one was going to Ali too.

    It's entertaining and fun though, despite all the missing. Ali doesn't manage to find his stride and start landing a percentage of his punches until the very last round, by the end of which Jones is rubbery leggd and sporting a nice shiner.

    Not particularly controversial for me.

    Havent seen this fight in ages but i remember thinking that Ali clearly won the fight and IMO this is just another example where an underdog does better than expected and scores a moral victory in some peoples minds, but as far as scoring goes i dont see the case for Jones winning this fight.

    Ali lost only four total bouts. Unless fraud was determined to have occurred by the judges scoring the bout an official verdict always stands. Winning a close fight is still a win and as good as any.

    6-4 for Ali. Ali had issues with good jabbers at all stages of his career, and some issues with smaller mobile boxers like Jones and Patterson.

    I remember scoring this bout and actually leaning trying to lean toward Jones (because at the time I didnt like Ali). I still couldnt give it to Jones. It was close but clear for me.

    i can't remember my score card for this fight, but i did have Ali winning it.

    Ali did get decisions in fights he did lose quite a few times, but this isn't one of them.

    I just had a look also. Clay wins by something like 8-2 in rounds. We have all been told that Doug Jones won the first round and nearly knocked Clay out. Yes Jones landed a good right hand over sloppy defence, but if you go on counting punches landed Clay actually won the first round!!!

    Tough fight I saw fight many years ago and scored it even. I will rewatch it this weekend when I have a moment. The fight I always felt was biggest gift to Ali was the Jimmy Young fight. Scoring it liberally for Ali I stll had Young up by 2 rounds. I found the 3rd Fight with Norton much closer than I expected it to be and could have gone either way after hearing for yrs Norton was blatantly robbed. I did have it 8-7 Norton but every round was so close that I could see the champ keeping the belt.
