Would the shoulder roll work against Mike Tyson?

Let's say a natural heavyweight with speed who's really good with the shoulder roll, like James Toney faces Mike Tyson.

Would the shoulder roll work against Tyson?

 

Doubt it. Tyson threw too many fast shots from all kinds of angles, one of those shots would land at some point.

 

No, tyson was a very intelligent boxer who set up his shots well and had serious power. He would hit and hurt them to the body, shoulder rolling on the ropes would be disastrous against tyson

 

If you were willing to fight with your shoulder dislocated, sure it would it work.

 

I think with Tysons head movement, aggression and his ability to hit hard at angles, that Tyson has the perfect style to expose the shoulder roll.
On top of this, in tight, Tyson could fight either stance in close and also has the ring intelligence to not fall into traps.

 

You've brought up an interesting point, how well does the shoulder roll stand up to big power? Does it lead to injury? I've never heard of Floyd having shoulder problems, yet the shoulder isn't the most stable joint in the body...

i think lennox lewis would have been able to employ the shoulder roll successfulyy against iron mike being that he was 7 inches taller

 

Tony Tubbs did try some of that slickness, it worked well for him for one round
and then in the second round, Tyson dug in a few uppercuts and it was pretty much over.

The shoulder roll wont work against a guy like Tyson. Ok Buster Mathis had lots of success, that was Tysons second fight after being absent from the ring for about 4-5 years and look what happened when Tyson timed him? 2 uppercuts and it was over.

Btw, James Toney gets sparked by any version of pre prison Tyson.

Dont think so with the shoulder roll you can be open to bodyshots, one bodyshot from Mike Tyson can finish you, i dont think someone would ever be calm enough to try it against Mike

Anyway, the shoulder roll is a tool, not a style. It can be used to some effect against anyone. Probably not what you would want to base your game around against Tyson though, no.

 

Depends on how good the guy using the shoulder roll was. There's a video on YT of Tyson talking about how difficult it is to beat Floyd. So Mike himself seems to acknowledge that the roll is effective but obviously he's talking about how good Floyd is overall not just the roll. So basically if the guy's good enough he can make it work. Being extremely quick and having great reflexes like Floyd is helpful and like someone above mentioned, being taller than Mike like Lewis was would probably help.

yes, if you're good enough and can pull it off while being calm in there, the shoulder roll will definitely work against someone like Tyson. the only problem you'd have is the body shot. but fighters who work on this move obviously get their body prepared for such an attack.

if you take your eye off the ball and get a little too over confident, the uppercut could catch you. but Tyson was so easy to time and read in there.

when on the inside Tyson wasn't as fast as you all say. it was the outside that Tyson was fast and explosive.
go and watch his career to see the difference between Tyson on the outside to him being inside. most of the time he took a few seconds looking for the perfect shot, getting his feet set. whilst he's doing that, you get your own shots off. Tyson would get frustrated like he did, and throw a wild shot that was very easy to read.

Tyson was always easy to tie up as well. in fact, there's not a fighter that comes to mind that was easier to tie up than Tyson was. he had nothing to offer when you did this to him.

so the answer is yes, you could use the shoulder roll against Tyson. he's perfect for it. but if you try doing it while you're intimidated, your own timing won't be there so you'd probably end up getting taken out with a wild shot. so only mentally strong fighters who can do it properly need apply.
