I'm truly saddened to hear this news. I didn't know of Joe's personal battle, no less because he had been posting around here quite recently. He was rightly treasured as a beacon of information, plus owner to a seemingly bottomless pit of brilliant, first-hand anecdotes that gave real flavour to eras most of us younger fans only know through pictures and recycled stories. As a writer I knew him as one of the best; somebody who had a very clear idea about what makes a piece of writing come alive; tangible characters, hit-ya-on-the-jaw descriptions. He endorsing some of my own writing, giving me some encouragement, but also didn't shy away from criticism. Honesty can be pretty rare these days. Rest in Peace. Let us know if Sugar Ray is still a STONE-KILLER in boxing Valhalla.
That's correct. This site's lost one of its classiest and most knowledgable posters. Rest easy, champ.
Oh, I feel so terrible. Joe Rein ,known to us as John Garfield was a treasure to boxing and ESB...Rest in peace JG, you were the classiest on ESB......
Cancer is a real ****. We often didn't see eye to eye but he was all class all the way even when opinions were diametrically opposed. ...and he loved the sport, more than most, which automatically solidifies a bond with the whole ardent fraternity. One likes to imagine he is up on the ring apron watching the past greats, sparring infinite rounds...
Wow, though he knew it was on the horizon with his recent illness, God bless him and receive his soul. I had many words with JG over the years and sent him some of my work many years ago, a Boxing Great in his own right, for wisdom, insight, writing and witness of many, many of Boxing's greatest ever fighters. Rest in Peace John/Joe, from this other JG. See you in paradise. God Bless!
Damn. Rest in peace John. I loved his stories and knowledge. Another site has a whole section devoted to him, where he shared his stories and views. You will be missed JG.
When I first posted on ESB several years ago, it was about my experiences as a young fellow at Stillman's gym and the great fighters I saw there. And my first post answer was from John Garfield in which he stated he was glad to finally to have another poster familiar with those days. I felt so welcome. Some time later he called me and we had a very pleasant chat on the telephone....I feel so damn sad now...Damn Grim Reaper....Goodbye JG...
