Is it true that in Irish boxing they have to have Irish Whiskey in the corner instead of water? Or is the water a chaser? Just joking about the famous Irish Whiskey...............
3 lads into the European junior boxing championships tomorrow http://www.iaba.ie/cleary-into-final-in-anapa/
Cleary lost a close one...took about 10 mins to get the verdict at the end, dont know what was going on.
Stokes lost too, to the English guy. Great scrap-thought he won it, catching his man on the way in but he did tend to go straight back, inviting Gardiner on.
Finally a winner...John Joyce 2-1 over a Russian, looded far clearer than that but no matter, great win. PS The Russian was shakhin all through.......!
What do you all think of Ryan Burnett, the kid from Belfast promoted and coached by Ricky Hatton? He looked promising today outpointing a Spaniard, dropping him in the 2nd and throwing bombs the rest of the way over six without tiring. Workmanlike offense, all hard blows, yet not sloppy, patient stuff. Did a little switch hitting, too. A bit open defensively, but still early days.
Sonny Upton wasnt great as an amateur, decent but not great never won an Irish Senior title . Burnett was unreal as an am would of done big things if he stayed amateur. He was no 1 under 18 in the world at 48 kgs .
It shows. Just from seeing both over six rounds today, first impression, Burnett is by far the more talented with the more pro-ready style. (and to say his stamina is better would be an understatement)
