Casuals arent a bad thing, they make up a lot of boxings fan base. I find them to be a little annoying at times. But im only on about my friends here as they are the only casual fans i know. They only get up for huge fights and when we watch it together they talk like they know everything about the sport but they usually talk cobblers. Thats what i think makes a casual fan anyway. I also think a casual fan is different to a purist based on what they think of the klitschkos. A casual fan will tend to say they are boring where as a purist will appreciate the skill they use in the ring and for me, thats wha makes them great to watch. Obviously im a huge klitschko fan so you may not agree there but thats what i think help to define a casual from a purist. But overall casuals are great for the sport, they bring more numbers and turn fighters into household names. They help build a fight and bring out all the hype from the tv channels. Dont hate the casuals people!!
I'm a casual. Never been in a ring in my life (I did some Chinese martial arts but never laced on any gloves Queensbury style) I don't go to fights but I like to watch what I can on TV/PPV/Youtube. I can appreciate good skills and enjoy more than just a KO shot. I'm not up on the grass roots of the game; I usually find about a prospect when they start to make a name nationally eg I first came across David Haye when the Carl Thompson fight was being hyped. I've seen enough over the years (I think) to have an opinion about fights & fighters I've seen and I like to contribute here when I can (which isn't very often). The only other reason I'll post is if someone is being a complete dick. You can see from my profile that I've been a member year for years but don't have that many posts. Folks who have a passing interest are boxing's cash cow.
Any c*nt who calls Kugan Cassius 'kugey bear' is usually a casual. I've noticed a lot of them believe Hearn/Matchroom can do no wrong.
You sound like one of the more knowledgeable people on the board. A lot of goons on here didn't know what boxing was 5 years ago.
I am watching the Froch/Groves fight with a lot of my mates I would class as "casual" boxing fans. If it increases the popularity of the sport then who cares to be honest it is the same with any sport, some people are more into it than others.
There are different levels of how much you like the sport, defining fans as casual is imo wrong.... Like boxing / dont like it? knowledgable about it, not so knowledgable...who cares! The less knowledgable fans that like the sport are IMO probably in the majority and are the fans that boxing needs.
The thing is a lot of self proclaimed "knowledgeable" boxing fans (especially on internet forums, blogs etc) mistake knowing a lot about boxing in terms of its fighters and history etc, with an understanding of what actually goes on in the ring, when really they know very little.
aint got a problem with them, although they can be annoying for some of the reasons others have mentioned the main reason i made this thread is cos i see the term being thrown around a lot on here, usually as an insult
I agree, for some reason it does come across as an insult, boxing needs these fans more than anything else... People in life are annoying due to numerous different reasons and differnt people find different things annoying. I find it annoying that we are even discussing how MUCH of a fan people are! :rofl
A Casual at least for this weekend coming up would be best summed up as someone who Believes that groves is favorite or the fight with Froch will be competitive. these people can not have watched previous fights with both fighters and must be listening to Groves, Hearn and Co who are trying to get their money this Saturday. Most sensible fans out there, see this fight for what it is, a Mismatch. Groves is a solid fighter, but this fight is all wrong for him. He will be hurt, dropped and stopped.
The problem i have wiith casual boxing fans is when they try and talk as if they know more then me, like i follow the sport closely, i hate when just because a fighter is a big name they think they will win and the way they buy into everything said on Sky, i remember making a ton when Haye fought Wladimir, loads of fools telling me Haye would win insdie 3 or 4 rounds, like if you want to watch boxing casually fine but don't act like you know or understand the sport, i watch the Wimbeldon but i don't pretend to know much about who will win ect, Casual boxing fans are very misinformed and easy to fool IMO
Agree with that, especially the bit about Haye/Wlad. Similarly when Hatton fought Mayweather, a lot of people telling me Hatton would win & that they had never heard of Floyd?!!?
