When a fighter clinches a referee breaks them apart, Foster didn't think this was part of his remit last night letting Froch hold and hit and even throw an elbow at Groves and hit on the break without deducting a single point....Hearn bought the referee it was plainly obvious, Groves was fighting two men. It has backfired now on Hearn as how can he sell any Froch fight but the rematch?
Why? Time and time again, jumping in after a brief flurry. Respect the sport or get out; the "British Stoppage" reputation didn't spring out of thin air.
Was he hurt bad though? I didnt see too many clean punches connecting at all. He fked up royally, and should be done as a ref.
He wasn't. His legs were there, he was slipping punches. You CANNOT justify that stoppage unless you've waved Froch off at least three times earlier in the fight. You just can't.
Groves mentioned to kugan that 'the momentum of froch's punches' was throwing him off balance, and in a way that does make sense to me. Froch's was flailing away with his arms not landing anything cleanly and mostly just pushing and wrestling him off balance, it wasn't as if he was concussed and thats why he was off balance at all. Shameful refereeing
Fosters body language in the minutes after the stoppage suggest he realised he had made a **** up. Groves got hit a few times, and for the first time in the fight, was rattled. However, he was still defending, and making Froch miss, if he survived that, Froch couldn't of kept up the intensity of that attack for too much longer without punching himself out. You seen pretty much straight away by his reaction to the stoppage that he was on steady legs and clear headed. Whilst I think Froch would of hunted him down and stopped him, it's purely speculation. It's professional boxing, and a single punch can turn the tide of the fight. Groves never got given a chance to turn it around or survive the round and regroup. It's not as if we've never seen a fighter have a bad round, and go on to win the fight. It happens regularly!
It's British referees with their **** British stoppages. Ian John Lewis, Terry O'Connor and now Howard Foster have all ruined fights and decisions now
Some naive posts in this thread. Incompetence wasnt the reason this fight was stopped too early. Foster is not an incompetent referee. He was way to eager to pull George out. Just ask yourself why that might be.
The reason this will continue to happen is that boxing fans continue to buy fights no matter how badly and how repeatedly the promotors screw them. Whining isn't enough. Fans need to put their money where their mouths are.
Well, most boxing fans are naive. Boxing is not exactly the favorite sport of scholars and academics.
Don't know if that will ever work. Legal inquiries, suspensions, jail time, and total reform of the sport is the only way it will change.
It wasn't just the stoppage either, Froch was constantly hitting after the breaks and the ref just stood there and watched him do it:-(
