Rocky Marciano's workouts were the most impressive I've ever heard of mentally or physically he was awesome. He would seclude himself and get in amazing condition, I'm not sure if he would run 10 miles a day. Everyone in his camp would not even say his opponents name. I read that Marciano once said that he wouldn't even worry about his opponent until he stepped in the ring and the bell rang. It is true that he wouldn't try any new foods, shake hands with anyone, accept any phone calls, read the newspaper, or even read letters from friends or family. He just focused and got in unbelievable condition. He was probably the toughest athlete body and mind. When he talked about the first Walcott fight he said about being knocked down in the first round that if he was knocked down a few more times the fight coudl've been much harder. That's impressive if you think about it, he knew he was going to win no matter what, no matter how many times he was down no matter how much he bled, it was a very hard fight and he had amazing confidence within himself. When he beat Don Cockell he had the flu but he fought very well no postponment he just went out and performed. He was very rare in this way, to be the only heavyweight to never lose a fight, he did this on heart and dicipline. An old coach of mine trained with Rocky once while he was champ and I asked him about his 300 lb bag and he said he pounded it so hard that it almost hit the celing, that's probably an exageration but probably not that far from the truth.

    Efectivley yes.

You might get breaks of say ten or fifteen minutes and might even sleep during those breaks, but you eat while you are running along.

Competitors often actualy fall asleep while they are in the act of running.

Know this is an old thread but i was curious about this, im guessing it's all just hearsay and nobody actually knows what Rocky's workout consisted of? Apart from he was quite extreme in his regimen lol

Marciano was addicted to the gym like a wino is addicted to the bottle...he was the best conditioned fighter of all time...he cut himself off from the outside world as fight time got closer...he focused on his opponent...thought of nothing else...he worked his ass off to get down to 189 lbs...

Yes, no other fighter ever thought of training hard. It was an innovation of the wee son of the Abruzzi. Ever before and ever after, fighters have taken it easy in camp.

If I remember right Rocky was such a nut for fitness he was known for running upwards of 15 miles a day during the fitness phase. He shadow boxed in a swimming pool he went as far as exercising his eyeballs by looking a direction in repititions. Rocky had a specially designed 300lb heavy bag built so he could develop the punching power and strength to move the bigger heavyweights he did this long before Foreman did it. So many do not realize that more than once Rocky fought in the 190's, Rocky valued fitness and strength over the sheer weight he needed to match up with the 200lb plus pounders. No heavyweight in history other than maybe Jim Jeffries matched his physical fitness. It would be fair to say if Rocky had a normAL regiment he would have been a 200+ pounder.

I am 5ft 10in and eatlng mostly peanut butter ran 9 miles per day along with an hour or so of fitness exercises like pushups, pullups, lunges, neck bridges and ab/back strengthening it took me 6 weeks to get down from 225 to 205 solid pounds. You are confusing a marathon athlete with a fighter who btw different body types with different purposes. A fighter only trains like this for a fight not year round. A fighter trains for battle a marathoner trains to run.

Rockys professional career lasted about 7 yrs he retired mainly for 2 reasons his back and his desire to put n the work to be competitive.

Rockey said he worked at building up a hatred for his opponent. He convinced himself the guy was dedicated to sending him back to the shoe factory.

While Marciano certainly trained very hard, I think it's a major disservice to other greats and probably many non-greats, to contend that he trained harder than all other championship fighters or was incentivized more than other fighters... as though he were somehow from more dire circumstances than unnumbered fighters from the Third World. He was a pro who acted like a pro and trained with intensity and focus. So does Bernard Hopkins. So do Wladmir Klitschko and Andre Ward.

I think the point is that back in Marciano's day it was rare for a fighter to train to such extremes, but yeah other fighters work hard too

If they did not have day jobs and had some backing, most of the top tier guys were all pro. Hell, I have read old Battling Nelson training exercises that sounded like torture sessions.

Again, Marciano trained very hard. He was a true pro. But he was not alone and he was a very gifted specimen to begin with.
