While he did a number twice on Saad Muhammad, he surely didn't beat James Scott like a "rag doll" at Rahway. He never once made Scott flinch in 10 rounds of throwing his best at him, and it was Scott who staggered Qawi in the ninth. I think Scott held back that afternoon myself and certainly looked like he didn't leave it all in the ring. Close decision and Scott looked like he didn't even need a shower afterwards. Maybe actually watching a fight before commenting on it might be a good idea. Otherwise, everyone else called it right. Still not sure why he couldn't do more with Spinks in the unification fight though.
What you actually were seeing, as Wesley Mouzon and Quenzell McCall explained, was that his habit of mouth breathing was simply too thoroughly ingrained to be corrected by the time they began working with him. But that actually further highlights what a great defensive fighter he was. (They also revealed that he wasn't an infighter by nature, but had to learn that aspect of boxing.) An open mouth in boxing is an open invitation to a fractured jaw. Qawi squared off against some monstrous punchers, yet he never sustained such an injury. "Flash" Gordon loved him, and favorably compared his defensive mastery on the front foot with that of Napoles. Best counter-jab of his era, and probably the most efficient ATG at cutting off the ring at that time since Foreman, keeping his lead foot between his opponent's feet. Michael Spinks had to produce a virtually perfect match execution wise to beat him. 5'5" tall, but with a wingspan measuring 5'11" across. In terms of physical dimensions, he was essentially the modern reincarnation of Langford. Many times, I've suggested that he was one LHW who might have given any version of Ali a lot of headaches, cutting off the ring behind his counter-jab as he did.
Let's remember two points,Spinks could punch as hard as anyone in the division's history and his style was so awkward it even gave Holmes(an inch taller)and atg heavyweight, a real test, twice. It was hard enough for Qawi to get inside, once he did,he had to absorb "the Spinks jinx". Spink's height, power and style made him extremely hard to look good against or beat, unless you have the speed and power of Tyson! If Spinks stood toe to toe, there may have been a different outcome.I feel Qawi's record as a light heavy, cruiser and even a little as a heavyweight demands an atg rating.
Best heed your own advice pal, because Scott lost decisively and he sure as hell didn't stagger him in the ninth or any round for that matter.
Someone did a thread on Qawi about a month or so ago, and I posted at the time that in a head-to-head sense, there aren't many that could beat him at 175. It took an all-timer like Spinks on his best night fighting just the right fight plan to edge him. He is an absolute nightmare for most light-heavies throughout time.
