why did rocky have a bad back? was it from lifting or from the crouching style he used?

I agree with pretty much all of this. Rocky trained as intensley as anyone, but there have been lots and lots of fighters who trained like Trojans.
Holyfield is another that treated training like a religion.
Hopkins is known for keeping in excellent shape year round, and is fanatical about his diet.
But all that said, Rocky was fanatical about training and overall wellbeing. It may have been diagnosed today as some form of obsessive disorder.

For Bummy Davis:hello. you said"he layed off for 1 year and he was 250, but still solid" did you meet Rocky? i read old boxing mags from the 1950's and they said at that weight(250lb) "he was as fat as a pig". did his upper body muscles "fill out" at that weight or just get fatter.i always felt that between dieting and copious amounts of training he actually cannibalized muscle.his new biographer said that he entered camp at 204lb and was more powerful(according to sparring partners). maybe he would have been even more deadly at 200lb instead of 189lb? this biographer also said Rocky was 5'9" not the 5'10 1/4" always listed, maybe they measured him in shoes? thanks.

I believe Hagler also trained with the same intensity.

If you read the little Charley Goldman chapter of this fine book* he made it clear Rock trained like a maniac but yousto stuff his face pretty big time. Drove Goldman nuts.

Also, Lou Duva spoke of this too.

Wow, Marciano's cronies and homeboys tell tall tales about this prowess.

    I am shocked.

I am not sure why I have heard his style was hard on his back but it may not be true. Lifting? I don't Rocky lifted anything weight lifted was taboo in his day.

I have heard that he would sometimes wear hip boots and run through the surf to build his legs.

Also, Joey Bishop (a big boxing fan) on a late night talk show spoke of Marciano getting into a squatting position at the base of a stairwell in a building and 'duck walk' up the stairs as far as they went.

Mariano was heavy here above^, still muscular but about 250lbs, below he was about 220lbs and below that about 190-200lbs. Marciano was 5"11, I never met him face to face but knew many that knew him well and said he was 5'11( Patterson listed at 6.05 and Dempsey listed at 6"1.5 Also I was told Marciano's arm length was fabricated, they were short but not 69 inches more like 72inches but I guess its a moot point because his size and arm length worked well.

I knew Floyd Patterson's brother in law well and he was a big fan and friend of Marciano before he met Floyd, he told me Floyd could have beaten Ali if he was healthy but they wanted no part of Marciano (who was an animal) this guy was also an ex-fighter (tough guy) Mickey Allen, he used to spar with Floyd, he was a solid bull like guy about 5"9 but he said Marciano was taller, bigger and stronger than him but he was amazed by Marciano's work rate, stamina, power, and killer instinct he said Floyd could not train right for his 2 Ali fights but Floyd felt he could beat Ali...Mickey said Marciano was the wrong style for Floyd and Floyd was mentally shot and going through a rough time when he faced Sonny

He ate anvils and shat bolts.

He also a lot closer to 6-2 with a 77 inch wingspan....

He had an extreme crouch and dip forward. Watch his tape. Plus, blasting punching as he did, with literally ever ounce of his weight and strength behind him, whether on a 300 pound bag or an opponent, will f*ck your back but good.
