I know he basically recieve no money for the first 17 or so fights he had, an his manager gave him a place to stay and some spending money becauset he had none of his own.

I'm not sure how much he made for the Cleverly fight, but I'm assuming he made some money as he won the title. I'm hoping he's finally startig to earn some serious cash now, he deserves it.

HBO said "Where you from? Russia? Here's a loaf of Wonder bread. Don't spend that all in one place." then they went and gave Pacquiao a complimentary mansion for Christmas.

It is nothing short of criminal how Kovalev gets treated in the purse/monetary department. He made like 20K fighting Campillo and White on NBC Sports Network then took extremely short money to fight Cleverly in Wales. At least his purse was enough for him to purchase a boxing robe and some new trunks. Before last night his ring walk attire consisted of a Russian flag and a baseball hat.

Lovalev could not have made all that much last night as the chief support bout in a showcase fighters hometown. He probably did not make more than 150K in either of his biggest fights that were on HBO.

In the 4-5 years he has been fighting professional Kovalev's average yearly income from boxing is less than what a school teacher earns and he is one of the best in the game. Obviously this will change but he will still get undervalued compared to his colleagues.

HBO is exploiting fighters and nobody seems to give a $hit..

"but-but-but.. He gets to fight on HBO!"

Perhaps Kovalev's team should play up the degenerate angle. Say he used to torture puppies in Russia and punch pregnant women in the stomach for fun. He would then no doubt get bigger paydays and be far more popular among a certain segment of boxing fans.

when you get your own broadcasting company or promotional company, you can write the checks. its up to his promoter to get him paid, its not HBOs fault or job :-(

    150k sounds about right.

Him and GGG who got something like $350k in his last fight both need massive pay increses.

It ceases to amaze me how boring f u cks like Alexander, Broner and Ward make compared to the guys like Matthysse, GGG, Kovalev and Adonis who the fans really love.

Wow, for a guy who's contender for FOTY and has given fight fans so much entertainment in 2013. Did you see his post fight interview with Kellerman? Make no mistake, this warrior will fight anyone. He might struggle to get the big fights he deserves because he is that fearsome.

it ceases to amaze me how stevenson, a pimping, woman beating, assault artist with no class or sportsmanship-as seen by his taunting of opponents while they're being treated post ko- has any fans at all.

Also the guys you mentioned- ward, alexander- have fought the best and beaten their fair share (in ward's case, all of them) and deserve the best paydays. Kovalev and stevenson have one decent name between them and thats dawson (who incidentally was destroyed by ward).

kovalev deserves a pay raise, but then so does pretty much all of boxing. only two get what they deserve (we know who they are)

Sad to think Rodriguez lost 5x more money for coming in over weight than Abdusalamov made in his fight.

Too many parasites in the sport. Fighters pay guys like Haymon to get them more money, then Haymon charges them a big cut. Think how many times Haymon's done that, and how each time he's dipping into the overall pot the networks have set aside for the sport. And exactly what does he bring to the picture?
