"You know who we want. You know who the public wants. You can ask them. I tell ya, he better come and get me before that I decide I don't want him. 'Cause money's not everything and that's what I'm trying to say. I want to show my championship skill out here and show the people that I'm a true champion." - Marvelous Marvin Hagler talking about Thomas Hearns That is a fighter. That is a champion. There's a whole lot of sissies out here today holding paper belts that they don't deserve...ducking the best challengers.
Any fighters like him around nowadays? I would have said Froch but after him not offering Groves an immediate rematch, i don't think think this any more. Unless of course hes trying to hype the fight up even more.....
Guys like Hagler will be remembered as the best of the best for hundreds of years. Most of today's entitled, money driven "champions" along with their accomplishments will be largely forgotten in a span of 3-4 decades. These days no one seems to care to prove himself as the best- I think its due to a shift of values in society. Wealth & luxury became marks of success, instead of actual achievement...
yer i miss guys calling eachother out... i loved what mosley did to get the floyd fight... literally pissed on his parade boxing needs more vocal fighters...
Holding a belt these days means **** all. To be the best you have to beat the best. Anyone else is just a pretender.
There are more fighters like him around today, but Hagler was holding the belts so they actually HAD to fight him too for world glory. He wanted to fight, and the others had to fight him. Today the guys who want to fight each and every guy often won't get the chance even if they're the clear #1 in the division. Nowadays it's extremely hard to get all 4 belts, so even if a guy wants to fight all the best, chances are he will never be able to because 3 other guys need to agree as well. And then I don't even mention the sub-belts.
