Why don't more champs act like this guy?

Because this guy didn't just act tough, he was actually a real tough guy. Big difference in todays fighters. I wont say theyre not skilled what I will say is that theyre far from tough. Hagler personified walking the walk. Hearns and haggler was actually chasing after each other to make this fight happen. Can you imagine anyone of todays fighter chasing after one of these guys to make a fight happen lol

 

Can anyone recall Hagler ever being hurt/stunned in a fight? How he kept going forward against Mugabi. duran may have been hands of stone but this guy was made of stone.

Also, an I've been told that Hagler avoided Herol Graham. Does anyone what the ins and outs are to Hagler-Graham and why it never materialised?

If this happened in 2011, all you would hear is:

"Marvin Hagler is a bum for calling out a Welterweight who has never once fought at Middleweight before! He should get no credit for the victory. And he should lose respect if Hearns makes a fight of it at any point!"

 

Can't hold it against a guy who decides to rule a weightclass with an iron fist, though. :good It's a misconception, with all the weight jumping these days, that it's easier to stay the champ and rule a division for years on end. I like that Marvin made people have to go through him at 160.

 

For me, he was the most talented fighter of all time, pound for pound.

He had two completely different styles. He outbrawled the best brawlers (Hearns, Mugabi) and outboxed the best boxers (Leonard, Duran).

He would have beaten Ray Robinson too, in my view.

 

See what happens when you're trained by italians, you get that ferocity and warlock mentality. Same with tyson/d amato.

BTT, Hagler-Hearns was like Pac-JMM IV.

One called out the other to prove something, the other submitted, and once they met on the ring, the entire world was dumbfounded and fired up to see that both boxers were true to their words -- they were INDEED trying to take each other's head off and knock each other out. I can't say the same for the other boxers today.

The way both Hagler and Hearns and Pac and JMM seemingly abandoned boxing 101 and sit way too much on their punches is simply a spectacular sight. Brutal. Almost stupid. But breathtaking.

It didn't matter who won. Both fights -- and all fighters in it -- were immortalized.
