I think that is the underlying reason why people tend to hate on him is because of his undefeated record.

Yes it is true that the man retired when the division started becoming hot (Dawson, Froch was calling him out, Kessler calling for rematch, etc) but he was at the tail end of his career and was at a good age to retire. He is much accomplished and I'm so glad he is going to be inducted in this year's hall of fame.

He's had an amazing career. 46-0.

I also think that much of that hatred also has to do with the fact that he completely totalled Roy Jones when Roy Jones was severely out of his prime and yes I can see why some would hate him for that. But is it his fault? No.

Hopkins didn't want a part of Joe in the early 2000's and priced himself out of the fight. Roy was fighting at HW during that time and even when he moved down, he was already beginning to completely slip and his invincibility was already gone after Tarver 2.

His chin was already cracked (No offense here, I love Roy Jones).

Roy wanted the 10 million payday and it was the biggest money fight at LHW at the time. It had to be made. Many actually thought Roy would win, even Bernard thought so. It wasn't like Calzaghe was going in with the whole would thinking that he was going to win!

Also the fact that he beat Bernard sandwiched between 2 great runs in his illustrious career.

for me its like this, people like because of his undeniable ATG H2H ability, hate him because of his weird slappy style and poor resume

i didn't care for him in the Jones fight cause he grinned and clowned (way too much) instead of just taking Roy out. his performance was immature, lacked class, dignity and an understanding of what is relevant and entertaining to most boxing fans.

He was fortunate he never fought the real monsters of that division when they were truly firing. You have to wonder who he didnt even manage to fight a true true top fighter at their best. Bar Kessler, nothing on his resume impresses me. He was also quite fortunate to get some decisions e.g. Robin Reid fight.

I think what some people forget is that back in the '90s the WBO wasn't a major title, at least not in the same league as the WBA or the WBC - that's why none of the big American names fought Calzaghe. He didn't have much to offer, and was high risk, low reward. Eubank and Benn didn't fight B-Hop or Roy either, and they passed the WBO title between them (although I think Benn held the WBC version for a bit). Some peoples' stock has risen since the '80s and '90s, when the WBO and IBF were more lightly regarded on the world stage but now they're considered former world champions. I like Joe Calzaghe, but I do think he was partially to blame as well - as far as I know he was very reluctant to travel due to a fear of flying. Meh. There are boats that go to the States...

Calzaghe's resume is equal to Trinidad's.

Defended the title a record number of times (i think or at least very close to the record)

One of the longest reigns in history

Fought a lot of fringe level mandatory fights but had some big names on there too

    Kessler at his peak

BHop who has proven he wasnt passed it, far from it

Roy jones was passed it but it was totally one sided and still a decent way to go out. A good show case fight of two great fighters taking to the big stage one last time. Not a resume enhancing fight but at the end of a great career i think he deserved a big payday like that.

Jeff Lacy at the time was a serious threat to anyone. Bombed since but i believe when an undedfeated, highly touted fighter loses for the first time, especially in such a destructive way it can damage your career. Weve seen it before and well see it again. He deserves credit for that win.

Eubank was getting passed his peak but it was Joes first high level fight. He handled it very well.

I think if had fought Johnson and Ottke earlier on and ended with Pavlik and Dawson while both were undefeated then people would have a lot more respect for him. I have no diubt he would have beaten all those guys too.

Did he avoid Froch? I dont think so. Froch was a nobody back then and he only reached the level he is at now a couple of years past Joes retirement. He had no reason to take that kind of fight at that time.

Overall, is he HOF? Yes absolutely

But could his career have been better? Yes

Is he the best Super middle ever? I think so, Ward may be better but well have to wait and see how his career goes but so far he looks like he could be better than Joe ever was.

I understand the hate, but imo he deserves a lot of credit.

I will also say one last thing. If he is a bum and a nobody then why do people make threads on him nearly every day? He is one of the most talked about fighters on here.

Who cares what he said. Froch repeatedly said that Groves isn't world class, but still fought him and got schooled for most of the fight.

The problem with the Jones fight is that is wasn't the real Roy Jones. However he was still a top ten fighter. Joe should be given credit for beating a top ten fighter.

Calzaghe and Jones are basically the same age and are from the same era. If Joe was a 22-year-old fighter making a name for himself by beating a faded legend then this fight would be more of an issue.

I don't think people hate him but he's had some strange fight over the course of his career. He's the #2 SMW ever for me slightly behind Ward and definitely a terrific boxer. I suppose his somewhat silly slapping style has riled people up because according to them, slapping the opponent without the intention of inflicting damage should not win you the fight. I think you can argue either way, I'm not sure. The Hopkins fight he lost in my humble opinion and this being a very prestigious fight seemed to have touched peopled emotionally in the light of the controversial outcome.

Calzaghe never beat Roy, he beat a top ten fighter. Schooled a top ten fighter on his home turf.

How can he deserve credit, when he said a fight would be pointless, and he'd be disappointed to take the fight?

He wanted the crown Jewells to face Roy in the early 00's, because he knew his capabilities, and anything less than a huge payday wasn't worth the risk.

But when Roy was nearly 40, he was happy with a 50/50 deal.

We all know what went down here, stop trying to kid yourself.
