It seems that whenever a fighter is 48-0 and attempts to get that 49th win to equal Marciano's record, something goes wrong and he loses.

Larry Holmes, 48-0, fought Michael Spinks and was outboxed, lost his title.

Roy Jones Jr, 48 wins and one DQ loss, was really considered undefeated by all fans because that one "loss" was not a real loss. Antonio Tarver knocked him out.

Paul Spadafora, 48-0, just a few days ago tried to equal Marciano's record and lost.

Chris John, 48-0, yesterday got knocked out. 48-1.

When Floyd Mayweather Jr completes his contract with Showtime, he will have fought 49 times. Will he be 49-0, or will Marciano's curse befall him on the very last fight?

Ricardo Lopez doesn't count because he got a hometown decision win when he got clearly beaten by Nicaraguan Rosendo Alvarez in Mexico City and they called it a "draw".

Lopez never got to 49-0 in anyone's view who knows boxing. Believe your own eyes:

I heard John got knocked down 3 times and they were all ruled slips, lucky it didnt go to points, would have probably been a robbery.

I think he will probably get through next year "undefeated", especially if Showtime allows him to select the opponents. I think it will be very hard for him to get through 2015 "undefeated". 38 is old for any fighter.

I thought Larry Holmes had already lost twice by the time he got to "48-0" (to Witherspoon and Williams) and Mayweather against Castillo when he was 27-0.

Anyway, Marciano's isn't the record. Chavez snr. was 89-0. 69-0 if you thought Taylor was cheated out of a win (I don't).

    Jimmy Wilde anybody?

This forum needs to understand the history a bit more.

Jimmy lost his zero after about 90 fights.

This is true. But the 49-0 standard is more high profile benchmark because it was established by an ATG HW, and also was not produced by a more lengthy period of "record padding" as Chavez's mark was.

Don't forget all those "Tijuana taxi cab drivers" he faced! Quality of opposition HAS to be factored in in assessing the value of these records - which is why Marciano's is the more prestigious and recognized standard, as it should be!

    Valuev also I believe

but Chavez smashed that record which is only really a heavyweight championship record to be fair.

And its nothing spectacular considering that the Rock didnt have many championship fights.
