That's what's in it for me - this fight is an absolute must for boxing purists. Rigo and Loma represent virtually the pinnacle of their respective amateur schools, the ultimate incarnation of the Cuban and Ex-Soviet styles. I can't see how it would play out, but even if it wasn't 'exciting' in the traditional sense, it'd be a fight where every twitch, feint or half-step would have significance. Two of the best amateurs in the history of the sport meeting in the ring as pros... what is not to like?
Lomachenko was just a kid in his first senior season when he lost that fight, he also weighed well under the 57kg limit the fight was held at. And that loss is disputed, and Lomachenko avenged it twice over. Lomachenko doesn't believe he lost the first fight to Selimov anyway, and he knew he'd beat him in the rematch at Beijing. Selimov is no slouch either, he was giving the gold medallist Gamboa all he could handle in their fight when Selimov was still green.
It will be strange seeing Loma being the bigger man in his pro fights. He was almost always the smaller guy in his amateur and WSB fights. Many of his amateur victims are starting their pro careers at 135 and above.
The better fight to look at in order to predict the outcome is Lomachenko's fight (well both of them) against another slick Cuban southpaw, Toledo. While Toledo isn't quite on Rigo's level he is a lot bigger than Lomachenko, and he still got dropped hard by Lomachenko with the head gear and bigger gloves. At the 4:00 mark, how would Rigondeaux handle that with small gloves? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJbUu7rTqRg
LMAO so true there was a troll on here called "dealt with" I think moaning about this the val barker isnt even a competition and if u followed the Olympics lomachenko got a lucky decision over toledo, rigo only lost once in a major tournament like lomachenko his other losses where back in cuba when he was younger and where boxing is a much higher standard! besides that rigondeaux is far better than lomachenko and will beat him easy!!
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOatschatsch I knew it was only a matter of time before the king of all trolls entered welcome "Dealth_with" LMAO
Rigo is so boring. He isn't schooling anyone with his low punch output and reluctance to engage. It would be an awful fight no matter who won. Doubt Rigo gets back on tv after his last 2 performances anyway.
First, Toledo couldn't have a more different style than Rigo. My point about Selimov was this: He's a slick southpaw, back foot fighter. Lomachenko lost to him. Whether he avenged the loss 9 times is irrelevant because when a top athlete loses to someone, especially if it's only once, they're going to drill and drill and visualize that style day in and day out to keep it from happening again. Can you see where I'm going with this? Lomachenko might be uniquely suited to beat Rigondeaux because of his loss to Selimov years ago.
So far a haven't seen enough of Lomachenko in pros , so I'm not sure how good he is against top professionals . Rigo looks like he's more polished ,but extremely boring , while Lomachenko looks like very exciting fighter to watch. Loma probably will make more money fighting rigo in his 3rd fight , than #3 p4p fighter. Rigo will be fighting on undercards or small venues with very few people watching, despite being one of the best and soon prob the best fighter in the world.
