I saw him in Lithgow a few years ago,I think he won a medal (maybe a gold carnt remember) @ commonwealth games a long time ago....
I still remember listening to his fight for Gold on the radio, in the car outside Burleigh Beach. The last I heard, he wasn't doing too well.
Arh ok,Did he ever turn pro?? If he did must'nt have went to well never really heard anything after the olympics.....
I heard spike is fighting his own demons with the bottle. Good luck to him, met him a few times & came across as a good bloke but different on the ****. Was a great Oz fighter.
He had a fairly successful pro career before retiring after a shock loss to Victor Baranov. I think it was him who suffered from Epstein Barr and this is why he retired in his corner and then hung up his gloves. The courier mail published a story a year or so ago on him as he was skipping for loose change..
Is a shame about Spike,he was rated in the world welterweight ring rankings, remember him fighting the Russian for gold, but come off seconnd best. Then he rematched him over 4 rds in Aust, was shown live on t.v,an amature fight which was hyped like a world title, which he won.
I remember that, had high hopes for Spike at the time. Bit like what Amir Khan did when he won silver and rematched that the Cuban b4 turning pro. Last time i saw Spike was when he was on a undercard of Troy Waters fighting at Central Coast leagues mid 90's
Its been said without any clarification the Spikes not doing all that great.. For well over a year now. Is anyone aware of his true situation?? Is there a way NSW (for starters) can help him?? Surely there's something in the game left for him?? Officiating?? Training??
I've known Spike since he came back to Lithgow in '95. He's never owned his own gym and he's also never been to gaol . He was drinking heavy and using pot and speed before the Terrence Alli fight and he still struggles with drinking and substance abuse. In a newspaper interview he gave (either Sunday Tele or Sun Herald) about 5 years ago there was a suggestion of bi-polar mental illness. He's sold his Olympic Silver medal and torch a couple of times and had them bought back for him a couple of times. His mother Carol was killed in a car accident about '98 and his dad Bruce died about 5 years ago and they were the only steadying influences on him before this. It's hard to know what came first - the mental illness or the substance abuse - but his career and potential were definitely never fully realised.
