Its a 10 count, not 10 seconds. It wasnt a long count at all, and im the biggest Tyson fan here. If the fight had been stopped at that point it would have been a big injustice to Douglas who up until that point was totally in control. Tysons stock would have plummeted way more than it ever did if that fight had been stopped at that point ala Froch/Groves. The public would have been screaming for Tysons blood on a seperate note, IMO the Groves stoppage was correct (upon second viewing)
I don't like Lennox, but I never seen him hurt a guy or have a guy woozy and the guy recover. He nailed tyson in round 2 with an uppercut and well tyson never recovered.
The things I like about Louis's finishes are the controlled aggression that motivates, and makes space, for his opponent to try to fight him off (permitting Joe to counter), and how Louis uses the entire target, so his opponent has a wide area to defend (i.e., not just covering up to stop head shots). When Louis finished, he didn't do too much differently, he just did what had gotten his opponent into trouble in the first place, only a bit more so.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question but Ali ? Liston either thru injury or mental instability basically quit in the first bout. Foreman collapsed from exhaustion as much as anything Ali threw at him. I thought Lyle was a pre-mature stoppage. Bonavena was the best shot I think Ali ever landed and it just hit Oscar right. Ellis and Quarry were chopped apart but on their feet. Foley seemed like a nice shot but he didn't have an amazing chin to me Ali was a great fighter without question but as finisher, average for his class ...
The great LH Champion Tommy Loughran, always said that Jack Dempsey, was the only man he was ever afraid of. He said Dempsey stalked you on the balls of his feet,like an Indian. He spoke of how fast Dempsey was, moving in on you. I'll give a shout out to the great Manassa Mauler, for the best finisher.
Douglas was in such terrific condition that night that I think he would have gotten through it. Tyson was pretty damaged by that point and was on the verge of going out right before he landed that uppercut. Usually a fighter in great shape recovers faster and better. He got his legs back pretty quick. JMO.
Hard to dispute any of those points. Dempsey revolutionized boxing with his offensive style. He was a devastating finisher.
When you speak of 'Killer Instinct' in regards to boxing, that phrase was spoken of in describing the way that Jack Dempsey looked and came at you. Tyson, intimidated many an opponent with that same demeanor and fury.
everything was written for Douglas that night. Had Tyson been in shape, the bell still would have rang etc. Its a shame there was no rematch. more than likely Douglas would have turned up how he did against Holyfield and Tyson turns up like he did for Ruddock. The irony is that Douglas always screwed up his chances to face Tyson but when they did fight he won. The first time this was against Tucker for the IBF title. The second time was when they were meant to fight in 99 but Douglas lost to Savarese who Tyson then demolished in about 30 seconds
That's because 1/2 the guys Tyson fought were looking for the canvass before the opening bell even rang, Savarese was one of them, as was Spinks. The list goes on and on.
