Benvenuti was always better the second time against a foe. He was in hist best shape in years - and he wanted to revenge the defeat and regain the title. But something was wrong. The Argentinian got ArthurMercante fired as referee and brought in his own Argentinian referee. And the ending was silly. in the third round Benvenuti was hit in the back of his head and went down - not shaken out out of balance from the illegal blow - but in stead of the referee warning Monzon - he moved his attention to Benvenuti´s corner who threw in the towel in surrender. Benvenuti could´nt believe it. The crowd was stunned. Monzon won. The talented Denny Moyer met Monzon in Rome 1972. Same referee. Monzon did´nt have an easy night. Moyer boxing smartly - but a single knockdown in the 5th ended matters as the referee stopped the fight, Moyer protesting. I won´t take anything away from Monzon. He proved his worth and he was great. But sometimes his opponents had to fight more then one opponent on the night.
There's no excuse for the Moyer debacle, Denny was doing well, although Monzon had stepped up a gear- awful stoppage. Benvenuti? Maybe Carlos was afraid of being shafted again...believe it or not, he was behind on the scorecards in the first fight with Nino...despite clearly dominating the action.

Something was wrong: the fact that such a fight was even signed in the first place. Utterly pointless fight given the one sided nature of the first fight, and the fact that he was coming off of a loss to a no hoper. Benvenuti was a bum at this point.
Greetings G. I mean no disrespect but calling Nino "a BUM at this point is simply a ludicrous statement. I consider him the greatest Italian fighter of all time, Marciano and others et al... I'd of liked to see a pvp Hearns vs. Nino. Yeah, he was THAT good IMO. A quote I remember was a young Cassius Clay in Rome at the 60 Olympics. He met Nino and said: "you the best White fighter in the world!"
It's so hard for guys to come back from the brutal late round ko's. Do they ever? I think for the rematch they were watching real close and as soon as things started to look half bad & the pattern was established, it was going to be a quick stoppage.
Benvenuti was completely shot the second time he fought Monzon and was badly faded the first time around.
