You know the drill...Taylor up big on two cards, two seconds left, TKO loss. So, is it...

    1) You can't put a clock on human life; or
    2) Referee Richard "Steal"

If in your judgment as referee a man is unfit to continue, but you let it go on since there are only two seconds left, you are taking factors into consideration that you as an unbiased party shouldn't. If a man should be stopped, it doesn't matter wether there is two minutes, twenty seconds or two seconds on the clock. If you let that dictate your calls you are being partisan.

Good call. Though you've got to feel for Taylor.

I don't have a real strong "right or wrong" feeling about it either way. It just seems a shame that such an effort had to go for naught with two seconds left, but **** happens. There have been bigger injustices in the world.

In a perfect world Steele may have let it go on to its own natural conclusion, but.........

Steele made an excellent call; Taylor was done.

The reason this goes on and on is because us 'hardcore' fans who liked a bet or two could see Taylor was excellent value, and had the speed to win on points. But somewhat bitterly quite a few could not accept the bout was over 36 minutes, not 35 minutes 58 seconds...

The referees top responsibility is the safety of the fighters he is not a time keeper.:good

As much stick as Steele got for this one I recall him saying that he was just concerned with Taylor's "condition at that time".

When a referee is asking if you're OK it's time to be animated.

Meldrick, brilliant as he was that night, shot himself in the foot with his no reply.

It might have been the right call.. but all this talk about.. Taylor was done or taylor would've gotten seriously hurt are blatant lies... Chavez wouldn't have even made it over to him in order to do any more damage before the fight was stopped. So no, the fight was stopped when Chavez could've done no more damage. Whether you think the call was right is one thing... but let's not pretend like Taylor was going to be beaten on for another full minute.

The ref's job is to look after the fighters. He is not the timekeeper and he could not have known exactly how many seconds were left.

He was right up in Taylor's face asking him: "Are you okay, are you okay?" Meldrick didn't respond and had no idea where he was.

Most ******ed call in boxing history. How the **** do you stop a championship fight with 10 seconds left??? **** Steele. Taylor stood up on his 2 feet, that should have been more than enough to continue the bout with only 10 ****ing seconds left. Pisses me off everytime.

Taylor was hurt. In hindsight, its a shame he wasn't at least allowed to the end, but that's idealistic.

To give the tale an ending like a presumed decision victory as a concession for his late round beating is what you'd like to think is a fitting end.

Its a shame, but Taylor was already forever changed (ruined) with two seconds left or not.

You can't tell me Steele never heard the 10 sec tap for the final bell........his smug smile on his dial when he waved it off still pisses me off to tears.......Ol JCC got a boxing lesson that night & still walked away with a W.......same as the bull**** draw when Whittaker schooled him.

I think it was a good call.

Anyone who thinks Chavez got schooled in this fight must not have been looking at Taylor's face... and must not have seen Taylor's RAPID decline mentally afterwards. Those people, the ones who love to play monday morning quarterback, should keep that in mind when pretending that decision wasnt legitimately made in the heat of the moment based on the fighters health. One more punch and Taylor might very well be even worse off today than he is which is basically a walking vegetable.

How can it be a rip-off when Steele screamed in Taylors face, ARE YOU ALRIGHT? and Taylor just stood there with some stupid look on his face, Taylor understands English why didn't he answer Steele??:huh jeez.
Also it's not the Refs job to know how much time is left on the ****ing clock! That's what you have timekeepers for!
And they had a rematch a few years later, and Chavez knocked him out again:deal
And last and most important, it's painfully obvious that Chavez was the superior fighter, he had more endurance, better stamina, more power, and strength, and a helluva better chin, and kod Taylor 2x and had a way better career, so it's pretty obvious the right man won both fights.
