I have no doubt he would land more than "here and there" if Bowe is leaning in like he did against Evander.

Despite having a massive size advantage, he had to bank on his durability and stamina to out point Evander in a brawl. Bowe just isn't a guy I feel comfortable picking over the great swarmers.

I can see your viewpoint, Holyfield was able to get inside and was effective despite Bowe being a good in fighter for such a large man. I just see it as tough because Holyfield was by most accounts 3.5 inches taller and outweighed the Rock by 20lbs. Could be competitve fight Rock was no B. Cooper he was better than that but it really is hard to give away that much physical advantage to a Very good heavyweight. Maybe not ATG but still very very good.

Its certainly time to put the Evander Holyfield is" slender "point to bed.

Holyfield is bigger in the biceps, forearms ,chest, reach, neck, height, by a considerable margin, and equal in the thighs. He in turn is decidedly smaller than Bowe. For example Marciano's chest was 39" [mine was bigger than that when I was a youngster at college!]Bowe's is 46" Marciano's biceps were 14", Bowe's 17". Point being he would appear absolutely huge when facing Rocky ,topped off with over 6 inches in height and about 13" in reach.Add 55lbs weight advantage, that is a really tremendous task for even Marciano to surmount.
We are not talking about a big useless lump ,we are referring to a skilled boxer- puncher with a top jab ,and some good power.
I've read Skeehan's book on Marciano he never mentions a hunchback of any kind. The fact is Marciano was just a short heavyweight, so let's get reconciled to it. Holyfield was 205 for the first Bowe fight and 217 for the second. His thighs being the same size as Rocky's mean he was not skiinny in the legs either.

-Why, your only beef was that Evander has larger "Tale of the Tape" measurements which has proven to be unreliable in guaging mass.

-Are you saying I can't call Tarver skinny just becuase his listed muscle measuresments equal Tua? It's clear as day, he's lean and Tua is thick.

-Of course he was a short HW, I just cricitized your sourcing of the exaggerated Ali/Maricano publicity photos. I also observed that Rocky's posture looks like it took a hit in middle age.

You can call Tarver anything you want, I'm talking about Holyfield , take a look at him sometime.
Marciano was 4.5" shorter than Ali. He would be 6.5" shorter than Bowe. That's the deal, end of.

That is fair. I just don't see Evander's 2-3 inches and 15-20 lbs giving him an advantage that Rocky wouldn't have in landing those short punches on Bowe, who I believe would just lean forward even more to swing at the shorter man.

-Who's Holyfield, never seen the bum.

-No doubt who was taller but the acutal difference depends on who you ask. That's why I use the range of their various listings to describe them.

What is it in the psyche of a Marciano enthusiast that makes them come up with these outrageous claims of his dominance over guys who ruled what should be several weight classes above that which Rocky ruled?

That is the most interesting question to me.

    What are you talking about?

Maricano was a HW, Bowe was a HW. The division was 175-to unlimited in the 50s. In the 90s, Maricano falls into the CW category as Evander once did and Bowe the HW. That is only one weight class, not several.

What is up for discussion is can Marciano at 5'10.5"and typically weighing 185lbs, give 55lbs in weight ,6.5" in height, and 13 inches in reach to a skilled boxer puncher, who has a fine jab ,and excellent infighting skills?

It goes a little something like this...

Riddick Bowe weighed in at a prime and very fit 235 for his first fight with Evander Holyfield. Marciano weighed about 185 for all his best matches. That represents Marciano fighting at 78% the weight of Bowe, or analogous on a strictly linear scale of a middleweight fighting a super featherweight (160 to 125).

Now, we all understand that the weight difference versus effectiveness correlation drops off as the weight rises... to a slight degree to about the 230-240 mark and then drastically. But the fact that the heavyweight division has been dominated largely by fighters over 220 for the past 20 years suggests this is no anomaly. In a week where we see a fighter in Broner being declared 7 pounds too much for his effectiveness (95.24%), to maintain the argument that a guy, even toward the upper end of the divisions who is 78% off in weight has a fighting chance, all skills being equal (which they aren't, Bowe has again the edge) is ludicrous.

So, yes, were the scale of weight divisions to follow a logical, not historical, progression, Marciano would be several divisions below a Riddick Bowe. I have not even discussed the ridiculously diminutive proportions of Marciano's limbs... Times were when midgets could rule the roost. Them times are gone... but not forgotten.

These threads are hilarious ... Marciano would be blasted out of the ring in a few rounds by the Bowe that fought Holyfield in their first bout .. the cases being made for Marciano are as usual hilarious .. they tell more about the poster than the fighter ...

Where are the arguments for a Chavez or Aaron Pryor against a Monzon or Hopkins ? Only Marciano is bestowed with this mythical "special something" that makes such ridiculous support consistant with a handful time and again ..

No. He is only one weight division below him.

185-190 is CW limit. Bowe is a HW.

    When "one" becomes "several" :huh
