'Muhammad Ali blasted both the WBA and WBC Boxing Organizations as Racists'.

Muhammad Ali has denounced both the WBA and WBC Boxing Organizations as racists, for threatening to 'strip' him of his Championship if he defends his WBA/WBC Title against 'unranked' Alfredo Evangelista.

Muhammad Ali, "Many Champions have defended their Title against unranked Challengers. Joe Louis did it, Rocky Marciano did it, and Floyd Patterson did it. And nobody threatened to take away their Championship Belt."

"Alfredo Evangelista is ranked, and he has knocked out 16 of 18 opponents. So what that he's only Age 22, that shouldn't mean he's not qualified. I'm an old man now, and I can't make every defense against the Top-ranked guys. I should be afforded the luxury of an easy defense every now and then."

"I want to give the lesser known/unranked Challengers a chance."

    "They're {WBA and WBC} pulling that 'Racist S***'.

Footnotes Evangelista was ranked in the top 10 by both organizations ( 10th ), and Ali in 1977 was 35 years old. There could have been a much tougher fight ordered for Ali.

When in doubt, reach for that race card! I guess they should have given him the same privilege they gave white heavyweight champions like Louis and Patterson. Wait, what?

I don't think they were racist, but he has a point in that he had a right to an easy defense. He just got the **** kicked out of him by Norton.

I think Ali was likely the best ever, but certainly said some racists things.

I saw the Chuck Wepner doc. Ali wanted to build up the fight and asked Chuck to call him a you know what when they meet on a TV show. Chuck, thankfully declined.

It obviously had nothing at all to do with racism. Ali definitely had a point, though, when indicating that Patterson and Louis etc were given an easier ride when it came to one or two softee defences.

As dire as he was,Evangelista was more qualified than Pete Rademacher, for example.

I tend to agree here. He had come off a hard, tough fight and was in fairness was probably entitled to a soft touch. Ali did fight some questionable opposition especially as he got older (I mean, Wepner & Coopman? Seriously?) but ultimately he fought every 'name' out there during his tenure.
...Would have liked to have seen a second Foreman fight though.

I don't think it was fitting of Ali to pull the race card though.

I have not seen it in ages. Was the scoring fair between Ali and Evangelista?

Regarding the Coopman fight, it was hilarious. Coopman was drunk before the fight, and his corner gave him alcohol in his bottle between rounds!

Wonder what they would make of some of the Klitschko's challengers?
