Bowe weighed about 30% more than Marciano. If we call Armstrong a natural lightweight (to MINIMIZE the discrepancy), it would be the equivalent of Armstrong fighting a light-heavyweight. Armstrong was one of the greatest in history both in general and in terms of conquering multiple weight classes, and he couldn't even win the middleweight title. So, good example. You want to put some of that vCash on Armstrong against Michael Spinks?
You definitely provided one. But Armstrong was 1 in a million, and welter is only 17% higher than feather, and when Armstrong fought welterweights, he was fighting in the 135-140 range, not at 126. Is Rock going to bulk up to 205 to fight Bowe?
-The point stands. And as for Foxy crying racism, me and many ESB classic posters had Langford KOing Wlad, which is an even bigger leap of faith in size. -Well, certain critics on these boards seem to be under the impression that Marciano is the only fighter in history absolutely incapable of gaining a single pound if the situation called for it. -If Rocky was told he had to face a 235 lb Bowe in 12 rounds, and not a 200 lb technical fighter in 15 rounds, would he maybe come in just a smudge heavier? You would think so. He seemed to intentionally come in over 190 against the few 220+ lbers he faced.
I mentioned Vasquez, and Marquez who were Bantams, and asked how people aren't stupid enough to claim they could give very good Welters and 154 guys a hiding, but they are stupid enough to claim that Marciano would give hidings to very good guys 40, 50 lbs heavier than him.
Oh really? How about, "It was the referees fault that I hit him as well as Savarese cos he wasn't doing his job properly." or "Botha deserved to have his arm broken because he was holding and hitting me." Then there is the " I was entitled to bite Holyfields ear because he was butting me." My favourite one is. " I was going towards Lennox in an aggressive manner because it was in the pre arranged script between the camps ( Erm, no it wasn't ) his bodyguard put a hand on me, so i reacted. Lennox punched me so I bit his leg. " Get TFO with the excuse mongering. I couldn't care less about his scabby personal life, lets just stick to what he has done in fight build ups, or in fights themselves. Always someone elses fault in the piece of ****'s pea brain.
-Super Bantam is 122. That is within the traditional FW class that Armstrong occupied. -Rocky beat very good guys with 15-30 lb weight advantages. Which would be like Vasquez and Marquez beating WWs.
He certainly could have put on additional weight for a Bowe fight. I'm not sure how much weight he could/would have put on and maintained maximum effectiveness.
I really don't think Rocky just clearing 200 from his highest prime 190.5 listing would be a huge stretch. If the smaller Qwai can gain 15 lbs and be a killing machine at CW, I don't think 10 lbs would destroy Rocky's stamina.
I don't think so, either...he certainly had stamina to burn. I'd be more concerned about it hampering his speed/mobility. Not in a huge way; just not sure there wouldn't be a cost that might negate (or at least partially negate) the advantages involved.
If Rocky's best weight was 200 he would have fought there. Additional weight would only make him a slower, less evasive target who would become increasingly stationary as his stamina is sapped. Again, why the need to reinvent the opponents in the match-up? The best version of Bowe was at 235 while the best of Marciano was at 185.
Well, certain critics on these boards seem to be under the impression that Marciano is the only fighter in history absolutely incapable of gaining a single pound if the situation called for it.
I remember watching Bowe as a 6'5 light heavyweight when he won the golden gloves in NY, he kept eating and got bigger and bigger. I also remember a 6"6 Gerry Cooney winning the middleweight title in the GG in NY with a 1st round KO, I believe he was a southpaw at the time I actually thought Bowe was impressive faster and hit hard at 178lbs but there were rumors that he had some issues once he moved up in weight and that Lennox was a better bet for a big future New York Golden Gloves Champion Riddick Bowe won four New York Golden Gloves Championships. Bowe won the 1985 178 lb Novice Championship, 1986 178 lb Open Championship and the 1987 and 1988 Super Heavyweight Open Championship. Bowe trained at the Bed-Stuy BA.
So, now we are pitting a 17 year old amateur Bowe against a 28 year old 40 fight vet Marciano? Keep moving the goal posts until you get the desired result.
