G-Man had Benn OUT in the first. The Ref messed it up... I mean Benn got punched out of the ring for gods sake!
By the definition of the thread title, McClellan fighting at 168 is irrelevant in this debate. Benn was a fun fighter at 160, with a clubbing power, but was found out. His chin, although not Chuvaloesque, was actually fairly solid. It was his lack of defensive skills that cost him at 160. Look at the bombs a Logan or Barkley landed on him, Benn did take them...
Whoopee. Anyone who gets stopped by a Mike Watson jab hasn't got a fairly solid chin. Nigels chin was ordinary.
Bit of a cheap shot at Watson. A culmination of six rounds of smart tactics and superb execution finished that fight off.
The ref didn't save Benn, or mess up at all. He used the time allowed to get back in and resume fighting. Look at the end of the first round and with just 20 seconds to go Benn hit McClellan with a left hook, whilst under another one of the Americans barrages, which made him back up. I notice McClellan fans don't cry about the ref constantly allowing him to rabbit punch Benn though.
Benn was completely spent by then. That same jab wouldn't have registered earlier in the fight. Watson fought a very smart fight.
Fitz and Langford were middleweights that iced heavyweights. I see none of that in any of the other fighters posted although all are good selections.
No one is saying Watson didn't fight a smart fight, but it doesn't alter the FACT that a jab stopped the fight, and fighters with " fairly solid " chins don't go down, and stay there from a jab. Benn's chin was in no way solid, fairly or otherwise. Just ordinary for a fighter.
The thing is --- Tommy, Gerald, Julian all relied on speed, timing and accuracy and that's what caused their Kayo blows. Nigel just swung with no thought, hit the wrong areas and still took guys off their feet and rolling across the ring...... calibre? First guy to stop Barkley, first guy to stop Sims, first guy to stop McClellan, and blew away Doug DeWitt (who withstood Tommy's right hands and Matt Hilton's left hooks)... Nigel Benn was the most robust banger, absolutely no question for me..he even threw KD blows while completely off-balance!
The chin of Chris Eubank mustve been just unbelievable, Benn's biggest blows were bouncing off his jaw and skull..
I'm not saying that Benn had that solid a chin, just that he was totally punched out and the fact it was a jab that eventually toppled him over had nothing to do with having a supposedly weak chin.
