That's why we hAve to be conscious with handing out ATG & that highlights my Top 100 ATG pick of Edwin Valero

 

Don't know who that reminds me of.....

 

Would favour Maidana and Matthysse. They are more proven at higher weights. I think Valero had a lot of potential but he never fulfilled it or showed/proved enough in the ring for me to favour him over two bigger, more proven guys who are also tough, powerful and have a lot of heart.

 

We should do a poll for Adrien Broner vs. Edwin Valero at lightweight and watch both delusional fan bases engage in nuclear warfare. :deal

 

The nostalgic boxing fans will go with Valero but the truth is Edwin was never really tested at a top level to see how good he was.

Maidana, Matthysse and Provodnikov fought top opposition. Maybe Valero was the 'truth' but we didn't see him vs any good fighter. (Katsidis, Guerrero, Soto or Roman Martinez)

 

We saw him versus two good fighters (Mosquera and DeMarco...some will count the ancient brawler Pitalua, but they shouldn't, he was honestly C level) but never an elite one.

 

Valero is a tough one to guage - I think he had a lot of potential and underrated boxing ability but he got hamstrung by many issues; the medical & visa issues stopping him fighting in US stunted his growth as a fighter and stopped him getting a lot of good fights that would have helped him progress, his lack of a consistent trainer made his stagnant and was a major self-inflicted wound and to top it all of his drinking/drug abuse hindered him too.

A focused Valero who had a top trainer and minus the demons could have been one hell of a fighter but he was pretty much wasted potential by the time he went off at the deep end.

 

I wouldnt compare him to Pac.
Valero puts it all into every punch and with speed.
You feel everything that he throws.
No so with Pac.
Pac relies on his speed and athletic ability.
Not the puncher people think he is.
His KO of Hatton gives a false impression.

some forget how good valero was when it came to using his boxing skills or defence I think an old trainer of his said you will see the real valero when he fights top opposition

 

He also died as a murdering scumbag so nothing to get over tbh
