Imo the broner-maidana fight didnt reveal too much about either fighter. Broner is hyped and maidana is still average. But 1 thing i did find interesting was how bad broner executed the "shell" defence. Watching broner was like watching a poor mans mayweather in slow motion. Imo broner showed the shell is wide open to overhand rights coming down from above the left shoulder, and was also very sucessful with the uppercut. Obviously broner doesnt execute the shell as well as floyd but the basic principles are the same. Does broners demonstration of the shell highlight possible weaknesses for floyd future opponents??

The problem with Broner is that he doesn't have the movement in the lower body to complement his shell. He just stands there. He has already been outlanded in previous fights, so it was really just a question of having a guy with some pop in his shots across the ring.

World of difference between Broner amd Mayweather's execution. Nroner stands and trades out of his shell. Floyd for the most part stays out of range. Being able to control the range and pace of the fight is Mayweather's biggest skill. Broner doesn't have it.

What makes Floyd great, is not just the shell and how he uses it, but he's got incredible footwork and general ring smarts. He can take that half step making the guy miss which sets up his counters. Floyd is just a far smarter fighter.

Inside fighting is Ricky Hatton's world, but Floyd was outfighting him on the inside. He knows how to jam and counter an opponent's offence so well. Floyd's arsenal goes above and beyond the shell, he's got much more in the locker.

Broner simply tries to imitate rather than master the technique. There is a huge difference.

It takes more then the shell stands to execute the style. Floyd speed, foot work, and reflexes is what make his ability to use it effectively possible. Berto tried to, but he does not have the attributes mention above to make it work. Fighters like Mandina been fighting Floyd his whole career, so people may use Mandina victory over Broner as a blue print, but there"s one flaw in that. Broner is not Mayweather.

I don't think it highlights any weaknesses that trainers don't already know about. I mean, I'd be worried if after 100 odd years, no trainer had an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the shell defence.

I am not sure any active opponent, with the style to cause the shell defence trouble, is good enough to make the weaker points matter against Mayweather.

If you do something bad it doesnt mean that ITS bad, Broner showed his defense is very bad and its not that shell it Broner he simply cant do it properly, its damn hard thats why only few and more talented fighters than Broner do it. If Floyd fights Maidana you will see that Maidana is great fighter to make philly shell shine even more Floyd will make him look silly, fact is Broner got hit with shots top level fighter(he isnt one) can not be hit especially fighter with "great" defense which he obviously does not have.
If i crash F1 car its not the car that sucks its me, same goes for Broner and philly shell, doesnt work for him when he fights guys his size...

I dont think Broner uses Floyds shell, Floyd bends & leans alot more with it then Broner. Broner pretty much just sets up the form of the shell & does nothing else with it. I wouldn't say there is holes in floyds D based off Broner's performance.

Broner's "shell" or lack there of is about as useless as Andre Berto trying this out for a spin. It is not a gravy train like they want to pretend ala Floyd defense is, therefore they get battered from pillar to post.

I really wish there was more respect for Floyd but be that as it may, he will continue to get dogged for lack of opponents available in his era. Once upon a day james toney had a shell that worked!

You dumb ****s do realise that Broner and Mayweather are two different people?

That's like saying, "did Corley reveal cracks in the shell" when he beat Paul McCloskey. He too done a bad impression of Mayweather. That is all Broner is, a bad Mayweather tribute act.

There are 'cracks' or flaws in every system. It's about how well you execute something.
