In 2013, Matthysse's defeat was probably the most damaging to one's respective career

Broner's was worse. No one has to buy a PPV now to see him get his ass whipped. There goes millions down the drain in future revenues

Sounds a little overdramatic to me. I felt Cleverly's pathetic performance against Kovalev has basically killed his career. He looked so bad and every single bit of his paper champ reign showed. Broner and Lucas still have careers and are good boxers no doubt, Cleverly is done.

Matthysse's defeat struck me as a noble effort that he came out of with credit. The fight was a closely matched proposition beforehand and a close match in practice: pretty even until the cut, which although obviously a result of Garcia's efforts, was somewhat fortuitous in its severity. I don't think any less of a fighter for taking on the best and coming up slightly short.

If people will insist on these absurdly melodramatic reactions to every loss ("he's a fraud!", "he's a bum!") then you can't complain when fighters are wary of taking on hard fights ("he's a ducker!").

For truly damaging losses, I'd agree with Cleverly vs Kovolev. It wasn't as unexpected as the Broner result but it was far more crushing and will I suspect have deeper consequences. The fact that Cleverly seriously contemplated retirement and has effectively been chased to a higher (and I assume he thinks, less competitive) weight-class says it all. I hope he regains some momentum as I quite liked watching him but I have a horrible feeling it will end badly. Kovalev hit hard for a light heavy, imagine what genuine big men, who drain to make a 25lb higher limit, will do?

As an aside, what about a "most damaging win"? Hard to see further than Froch vs Groves. Froch won but had his technical defects writ large to even the most casual fan, came across as an arrogant tool in the post fight interview, and now looks like a two-faced coward regarding the re-match.

Disagree the Alexander loss was the most damaging one. Since the Bradley fight he's been stuck in that mid tier unable to get the good fights, look at this year for example Brook and Kahn ducked out a fight those could have been good wins if he was able to pull it off, now with him losing the Porter fight he's basically stuck. He could fight Midana again for a title but I don't see to many people fighting Alexander when there are better fights money wise to take over him.

I'm a fan of both Matthysse and Alexander, was dissappionted in both their losses this year. Alexander got beaten up by Porter for the most part, and to me Matthysse got dominated by Garcia no contest it turned me into a Garcia fan. Some people think that fight was close so a rematch could happen and even if it didn't Matthysse is still probably the 2nd best JWW so he has more leverage as far as fights just how I see it

Not sure, I dont see anyone who has what Garcia has

Granite chin, good power, height and reach and good variety of punches

Matthysse can come back he still destroys anyone at 140

Never considered retiring and he was very unlucky in that fight he was hurting Danny Garcia until his eye injury hampered things. Isn't he going to have a rematch.

Hmmm....which one shall I chose: losing with its possibly attendant ruination of health and career, or being called "a coward" by anonymous people on a forum? Tricky one that, between Scylla and Charybdis stuff.

Broner lost damn near every round..
Matthysse won damn near every round till the 7th (round the eye got shut) and then made it close with one eye against the 1 guy at 140 I don't know about yall but I call that Impressive.

Ps: He never said once he wanted to retire your thinking about after the devon fight

It was a close fight, take away the BS KD and lucas wins. Broner on the other hand got destroyed and will never be the same.

Broner's was way more damaging. Mathysse is still a beast and there are many (including myself) that would love to see a rematch with Crispy.

Broner was exposed, he's young and I'm sure he'll come back but we found out he is only half as good as we all thought (I didn't buy all the hype but I though he was good enough to outpoint Maidana).

Other than Broner, definitely. I guarantee you that he would have been a top contender for the Mayweather Sweepstakes, had he won that fight. They were even hyping him up as the next Manny Pacquiao. I seriously think that GBP was hoping he would win.
