All that comes into play here. I's a smart financial move by Cotto but a win(long shot) would greatly enhance his legacy and it takes balls to move up and fight a bigger guy even if the main reason is money!

A fight with Canelo is not guaranteed and as you know, anything can happen in this sport. Cotto can get hurt, Canelo may lose his next fight, etc...

    I don't agree necessarily.

If Cotto loses to Martinez he can still drop down to Light Middleweight and make a big money fight with Alvarez.

However if it was the other way round, a loss to Alvarez and a big money fight with Martinez is pretty much out the window.

Sergio is gonna heal up, it will look like the Dzinzuruk fight

Cotto is a warrior doesnt need to be taking risks like this at this stage of his career

Cotto's spent his entire career chasing fights like these

So different from say Manny suddenly desperate for the Floyd fight. THAT's about cashing out and nothing to do with having balls

If Cotto had something to lose you could say he had balls to take a Martinez fight, but he has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

A fighter on the upswing making that move you can say takes balls, not a fighter like Cotto who's on the down swing.

After Roy Jones Jr. started losing, all of sudden he found himself in a position where he did'nt have a standing to lose.
No longer considered a p4p fighter he all of a sudden wanted to take on all comers.
It was'nt because he had balls, it was because had had zero to lose and needed money.

The difference here is that Jones was accused of ducking fighters Cotto never has. As Beouche alluded to, Cotto has always sought out the best possible fights.

Nah **** that. Call me old fashioned, but as long as Serg (or Cotto if he wins) is the MW champ he needs to give the no.1 contender his deserved shot at the true crown.

Thing is to Cotto, if he loses the Canelo fight is still there. That's why I disagree he made a huge mistake as the TS stated. Boxing is a business first and foremost.

I would guess if he beats Cotto, he will try and get either Mayweather or Alvarez in the ring. If not he's going to have no choice but to fight GGG. :scaredas:

I doubt it will put I wouldn't rule it out. If Martinez and Cotto fight at a catchweight and Martinez wins but has a struggle, Mayweather would probably fancy his chances of claiming the lineal middleweight title at the same catchweight.

Also don't forget that at the time the odds are Mayweather would've dominated an undeserving opponent like Khan or Maidana and will be facing a servre backlash about that choice of opponent.

a severe backlash in my book is vacating a belt that pacquiao is number one challenger too

if Floyd wants to play at winning 'hollow titles', then good luck to him

Cant hardly believe people here would disparage Cotto, a guy who has never ducked anyone.

Plus, hes still only 33. He was on a downswing, but when you take some time off, take training seriously with a new elite trainer and stop harsh weight management and even build your physicality up some its entirely probably that he gets another 3 years, maybe even 4 or 5 of prime career. (just ask Martinez himself about that last point. He became lineal MW champ at like 35, beat up Jr at what 37? He moved up from 154 ).

Its obvious Cotto see new life and a new stage of his career at MW. But if Sergio comes in 100% hes going to be very hard to beat.

As for Canelo, who cares? He should be fighting at 160 anyhow. Hes going to have to move up sooner or later anyhow, right now he relies on his youth for harsh weight cutting. He would be smart to move up sooner rather than later, before it starts to take a permanent toll on him. Staying 154 for the FMJ fight ofc made sense, too much money there. But its obvious he is far too drained at 152 to ever be a threat to Floyd, he should start thinking about moving up to 160 and nabbing Sturm or Quillan belt. (Canelo has the bankroll to likely get Sturm in the ring especially before he was proven at MW)

Would then be in a good position for those PPV caliber fights with GGG, Cotto, Martinez at 160. Cause if Cotto moves up, even to 158 for Martinez match... I dont see him going back down. Going up as you age is one thing, dropping back down probably wouldnt be smart.
