Now he is with Virgil who is doing everything mentally correct with Khan BUT is trying to make him a fighter he cannot be (smart lol)

That's how he always fought, even in the amateurs. Khan isn't much for skills, all he has is freakish speed and activity. Take those away and you have a very basic wide open target. All that can be done is adding improvements here and there, a complete change is almost impossible. Roach added improvements but nothing more can be done except teaching him how to master the clinch when hurt as Hill proved he's working on in the Diaz fight.

 

Khan has always been too aggressive for his own good even before Roach. Just look at his performance at the Olympics. First round he boxes and moves and wins the round easily against Kindelan. The rest of the fight he chases Kindelan and gets countered silly, had he simply used his superior movement, speed and size and boxed he would have won Olympic gold not silver.

Roach took him from being KO'ed against fringe contenders like Prescott to being a genuine top 140lbs fighter. So Khan should be thankful to Roach he has achieved what he has done so far.

Khan's regression is down to his lack of ring intelligence and his inability to fight as a pure boxer. He has stagnated while his opposition have figured him out and learned to counter him between his flashy combo's.

Physically he is as talented as you could hope for in a fighter, outrageous speed, good power, size, reach, agility but he fights like an idiot. Basically he has elite physical attributes but journeymen skills and ring intelligence. It's absolutely infuriating watching Khan fight it's like watching a Bugatti Veyron take part in a demolition derby, all that speed and power wasted in a futile act of self destruction.

He needs a trainer to do his thinking for him and create a strategy for him but he still needs to execute his trainers plans for him to be effective. When he abandons the plan and allows his pride and ego to get the better of him, this is when he gets unstuck and in trouble.

Well, this mental image pretty much articulates what I get out of watching Khan. For someone operating at the class he does, the man does come across as levels below in terms of ring smarts.
