Qualified judges, paid to give the homtown star the benefit of the doubt- hardly anyone bar you and them gave him yhe Amaral fight and even his own team said Schommer beat him.:yep. Eubank's 'tour' was basically a fighter staying busy earning money vs also-rans and fighters who nobody would ever hear from again...and this is meant to be impressive? I'd have preferred him fighting twice a year vs a Toney or a Jones, but both would have beaten him in their sleep and we know that he knew that too. You were fooled by the garbage he served up most of the time, so well done you...the equaivalent of you in Germany loved watching Ottke and also points to "qualified judges" as evidence Ottke was really excellent. So much for the tour...what a treat that was- as demonstrated by this Boxing News cover... "Tour De Farce": http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOXING-NEWS-15-July-1994-/320669434924?pt=UK_Magazines&hash=item4aa963442c More crap served up as reported here: "Stinker" http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/oct-21st1...145068907?pt=UK_Magazines&hash=item20dce6d56b Close...very close fight...everyone bar a complete clown thought so. The legendary Ray Close... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOXING-NEWS-27-May-1994-/220752128554?pt=UK_Magazines&hash=item3365da2a2a All issues currently on sale on ebay. Posters should treat themselves to what the fight press really thought of this garbage being served up by Eubank.
Boxing News - a biased trade paper that was read by 120 people. we know the British boxing press didn't rate Eubank mate. Barry McGuigan, however, an actual fighter and former world champion himself, gave Eubank the Sherry, Watson, Malinga, Thornton, Close and Amaral fights BY MILES in his commentary or analysis - that holds more weight than amateur-nobody writers.
Remember when the BBBoC monitored Eubank's weight for the Wharton fight having been horrified that his skin had turned Grey at the weigh-in for the Schommer fight (6000ft above sea level and with two weeks training..). It resulted in this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Boxing-Ne...163279736?pt=UK_Magazines&hash=item2586147d78
They knew more than a pub full of knobheads watching him on ITV They knew their stuff...the reality is they did rate him but not in the class of the top Americans at the time and they saw what was being served up across the pond...and were more impressed. The only ones who weren't were pubs full of knobheads. Really? Barry must have carte blanche on every fight that's ever happened then...the man who thought Whitaker-Chavez was an extremely close bout and that he thought a draw wasn't a bad decision on the ITV footage at the time... is, apparently, the only person whose opinion on boxing counts. Of course, an ITV "yes man", towing the party line must have far more objectivity than a trade paper that's existed for over 100 years. :huh Does it? Yeah, I really wish Lloyd Honeghan, Murray Sutherland and Ossie Ocasio wrote for Boxing News back then, rather than Harry Mullan, Graham Houston and Gilbert Odd.
Eubank to me is a bit over rated as a boxer, but the man was tough. I think Jones, Hopkins or Toney schools him. Back in the early 90's the WBO title was thought of as the " 4th belt "
His poor showings against Close, Amaral, Schoomer and Sherry need to be balanced against his wins against Benn, Watson x2(I thought he beat Watson first time round in a close fight) Rochigianni (close as well)Malinga,Thornton. He was a little unlucky agains Collins in the first fight as well. That's a pretty good list of opponents. He was a little too crude off the front foot as Conteh states, and for me means he was a step behind the top americans like Toney,BHop and Nunn. RRJ and Herol Graham would've played with him as well.
Have seen this so many times and it's utter tripe that Collins came anywhere close to beating Kalambay.
Unless you get the British boxing press/fans to score it (re-writing the rules of judging to include ineffective aggressive).
Eubank Could have been the best at any weight??? Despite being given a boxing lesson by a fat out of shape bum called Dan Schommer atschatsch
They were making massive money in the UK and neither were that keen on taking on Toney, Nunn or Jones Jr at the time. Eubank especially was vocal about fighting solely for money and didn't really want a 'legacy'. He said he didn't want to reduce his own life by fighting Jones and made up an obscure excuse about both being champions so neither could be the others mandatory. Benn signed to Don King who would make the fight with Jones on the basis of Jones signing a long term contract with him, Jones countered a 1 fight deal, which King rejected. Herol Graham beats them both and Watson won the first Eubank fight for my money. That's the name on his birth certificate, he couldn't pronounce it and changed it to Eubank, I'm not sure if he do so legally or not though.
