I really, seriously, want to more closely examine this John vs. Hasegawa business. In his hateful haste (or is that hasty hate?) ice, however inadvertently, banana-peeled quite serendipitously over a hypothetical match-up that is making me equal parts horny (or, let me redact that last bit and start over - ...making me so horny, being that both participants are Orientals, so it's only fitting that we honor their shared culture...) and wistful that it didn't come about when it easily could have, during those latter days for both when they were each in need of a respectable dance partner at featherweight - Hozumi for redemption and John to put a feather on his cap before hanging it on the surely-intricately-sculpted-to-resemble-a-dragon's-maw hook on his valet stand.

During that period, late 2010 until 2013, Hasegawa fought Burgos and Gonzalez but sort of fizzled after that with opposition quality. John fought Saucedo and Yordan, and then similarly fell off with the stretch of Merdov, Kimura, and Piriyapinyo (extendable to include Hosono, who didn't seem a very worthy or dangerous challenger in the first place, without the benefit of hindsight now to see that for the quickly fading John he was a bit more dangerous than he should've been...) being sort of a sad end...with the loss to Vetyeka making a sadder punctuation. His last great victory was Yordan, for whom many won't give him credit as he is 'merely a domestic rival' and someone they'll say they saw Caballero easily outbox years earlier and prove didn't belong on the world stage. (true enough, Caballero did easily outbox him but styles make fights and Yordan was for quite some time for anyone out there a potential handful...) and Hasegawa undoubtedly would've been seen as tenfold greater and something he could walk off into the sunset very happy with. Conversely, for Hasegawa to return from being written off as damaged goods after being kayoed - twice, in his career - and be the one to claim John's increasingly available zero...that would be massive. Comeback of the decade type stuff. (Eat a bag of dicks, President Vittles!! :tong)

Now, moving on from the "significance and context" brouhaha and onto the actual fight itself...golly, what a cracking little row that would be. John standing in the pocket and looking to snooker foes in for the counter punch... "Here I am, come and geeeeet me...aren't I slow? WHOOPS! FACED! :beat Ha-ha!" Hasegawa looking to (re)establish himself as a puncher after moving up from the weight at which he became known as one but where it took him several years to develop that power and reputation... I don't think John hits as hard as Mini-Burgos, let alone Kochulito or El Raton, but Hasegawa would be there for him, because Hasegawa would see in John a hittable feast on a platter and would be circling in close, leaning and dipping to either side hurling those left hand thunderbolts or working off the ropes letting John press a bit and thinking "I've got you right where I want you now..."

Oh man. Why didn't that come together somehow? :-( They're not even four thousand miles apart! They were virtually neighbors! (especially given the prevalent logic we are taught by John haters, where all of Asia is 'his backyard')

Maybe there is still time. Someone flash the Dragon signal!

Chris, bro, we need you to lace 'em up one more time and brawl with Hasegawa or IB from the internet will never be a soul at rest!!

Well, I'll admit that having ever had Piriyapino in their top ten was a bit silly...

    1. Yordan and Vetyeka also were at the ass end of the top 10 by some/most rankings.

    2. Pretty straight forward.

    3. If he unified with the WBO, you'd be saying the same thing. It adds zero relevance I'm just saying. Both were ranked top 10 though, so...

    4. Lots of great fighters never successfully unify.

    5. That means those guys were also opponents chosen by other titlists to defend against, ranging from Hozumi Hasegawa to Jhonny Gonzalez.

He is gonna be in the International HOF

Accept it and deal with it.

He was unable to consolidate the titles because a large majority of other title holders, had no financial incentive to fight in Indonesia where Chris John had rock star status.

This comes down to money, the only time he was scheduled to headline a bout here in the states was the same night of the Maidana-Ortiz (remember the evening of "I am too young to get beat up like this?) Juarez and John were to headline that night but the fight was eventually re-scheduled.

Truth is that financially he made more money not fighting the other title holders, and they made more money not fighting him.

Promotional issues and such....Boxing is a business, he was a star and made ALOT of money in Indonesia and that part of the world, why take less coin, less fame, for more risk?

Thank God this farce is no longer champ. Made his career winning 3 rounds against Marquez and fighting C-level fighters. He was good, but never had the balls to be great. Exit the Dragoon.

This forum is way to western centric it really needs to look east a little more it's missing so much......

Everyone who's saying he didn't have the metal to leave Indonesia clearly don't understand how many SEAsian fighters no matter how big would love to fight abroad but due to very small minded management never get the chance. I'm not 100% sure on the behind the scenes handling of CJ, but his situation smells very familiar.

Many fighters in SEAsia are literally "owned" in a way u don't get in the west anymore. It's more akin to ancient gladiatorial slavery than modern boxing management. Many have little choice or input in their future. Thier handlers lack control aboard so keep them at home paying them what they believe are big paydays but in reality are very small compared to the west. Samson Dutch Boy Gym is a great example of this.....

Chris John was one of the all-time greats (and fighter of the decade). He will be greatly missed by the boxing community.
