Both of them are clearly past it and Martinez showed lately that he's not the same anymore. That's Cotto's only chance in this fight. Don't compare the Martinez that fought Williams x2, Chavez and Pavlik to the one that will fight Cotto soon.
Why don't compare the Martinez who fought Chavez? That was a healthy and focused Sergio, just like the one Cotto's going to get. I say don't compare the Sergio who fought Murray with one good hand and one good knee and who was overlooking Murray going in.
If Martinez can fight Cotto without sustaining any type of injury he will clean him out but he's looking very brittle these days. Good fight. Props to Cotto chasing the glory and not the payday.
I'm getting little tired of people overreacting to Sergio's recent injuries as a sign he's past it. Fighter routinely pick up injuries like these. By this criteria Andre Ward would be considered brittle and shot with his busted hand and then later torn shoulder. Sergio looked fantastic for 11 1/2 rounds with Chavez, then doesn't fight again til 6 months later where a couple injuries re-emerged. The Murray fight has been the only evaluation of his physical ability to which people are assessing him as shot. Hopkins hurts his back in Dawson I and people say that's it his body is done, now how many years later are we?
He is hitting 40 years old , has been in a lot of hard fights and has a lot of miles on the clock. His style is also a young mans style. Comparisons to Andre Ward do not apply.
Because I don't think Martinez can fight like that anymore. He arguably lost to Murray and didn't look as good as he used to. Yes, most of the credit should be given to Murray for that but we all know Martinez could perform better than he did. If he does, then Cotto is in for some serious hell.
