If size means nothing... Could a PRIME Calzaghe beat Mike Tyson??

You would think that a guy like Joe who wins all hypothetical matchups would be much higher regarded with in the boxing community. More regarded than SRR, Ali, etc... Unfortunately the opinions of internet fanboys do not change Joe's status in the annals of boxing history. Besides if Joe were to actually take this fight, it would be right about now, Tyson has to be pushing 50 isn't he?

RJJ beat Ruiz
Ruiz beat Holyfield
Holyfield beat Tyson

Calzaghe did have power early on in his career. He also had a decent chin, amazing work rate etc.

None of that would matter with the eighties Tyson in front of him. If Calzaghe was around at the same time and this was 88 no one would even post this!

Who is comparable in size and skills of that time? Michael Nunn?

Imagine Michael Nunn in the ring with Tyson in 88. Its just the same as Spinks. Using a BB gun to stop a charging Rhino.

Because America is the place to be for big fights and events. There's a reason every foreign fighter's dream is to headline an event in America to reach real fame and stardom. Ever wondered why Calzaghe was unknown his entire career?

He was known alright, which is why his one and only PPV(and farewell fight) was against another beyond past it ancient RJJ and it made $140k buys with 24/7 involved. RJJ sold triple that amount fighting ancient Trinidad.

 

So which American SMWs was Calzaghe supposed to fight in America.
This will be good because he knows Calzaghe agreed to face Hopkins in America years previously.

Calzaghe wasnt unknown at all. I just think it bugs many foreign fans that the best SMW ever with the best resume didnt feel the need to fight in America earlier in his career but still beat the best fighters who were willing to face him

Calzaghe was very well known even when he was beating arguably Americas best SMW of that decade (B Mitchell).

As you note Froch against Groves sold well

 

Calzaghe wasn't well known Bailey. No one I knew had heard of him. Even by the time of crappy Lacy getting minced, Kessler was better known since he possessed the more recognised titles.


He was a tiny note of about two lines in newspapers around the time of Mitchell. Perhaps you mean the Cardiff local papers, but hardly anyone knew if this guy was even a boxer back then.

 

Wrong again as it was Lacy and Kessler that wanted to face Calzaghe as he was deemed the man.
