Very solid Jab, and he seems to have a reasonably high ring IQ. Worrying the way he seemed to want to directly trade with froch in the later rounds though, his willingness to go 'mano o mano' and frochs will let him back into the fight imo
Has speed, decent jab and seems to have a fairly hard over hand right. Things that would need improving to beat ward, I think he got dragged into a war with Froch and he didn't need to, seemed to have a lack of energy over the later rounds,
Groves is an excellent athlete. Very fast punches with decent power He's much like Haye tho very explosive and fades later on. Give him few years to work on his stamina in later rds and he will be a force. Another Froch rematch into the trenches wd be a great platform to build off win or loose. After hat it's only ward that's clear ahead of him
To be fair other than the lead up to the Froch fight, he has conducted himself well. The whole thing with Froch was basically because he knew Froch was so hung up on himself, telling him a few home truths and acting the way he did ultimately got under his skin and if not for Howard Foster, in my opinion would have likely helped him pull off a victory.
Oh I completely agree, just was not sure if the poster I quoted thought the same... Groves was trying to get under frochs skin and it worked, it is all gamesmanship anyway, even if he was telling the truth... From what I have heard Groves can be abit whiney and spiteful though, but is generally a standup guy
He looked good against Froch. My verdict: Froch is deteriorating fast and Groves is better than I thought he was.
Groves has Froch running like a chicken, something I never thought I would ever see Froch do, but Froch is afraid................I will never respect Froch again unless he fights Groves in a rematch...........
Groves is very good.. People say he faded in the later rounds but if you remember he didn't have the best of camps. The one thing i like about George is he punches hard but with a viciousness and can box well behind a jab. Forwards and backwards. At the moment wards a little too much. But a couple more bouts with 12 rounds will see him right. Big things are to happen for him.
He is a quality boxer and is a world champion in the making, but not so sure he can dominate. A lot of people are making a judgement on the performance against Froch, which I admit was a master-class except the last 2 rounds. But lets not forget, styles makes fights, and Froch was tailor made for Groves, who utterly exposed his slow, gangly style of boxing. Put him up against other opposition Ward, Bute, Kessler, Bika and we'll see what he's made of. Also a rematch against Degale should happen. The result could have gone three ways and that needs to be remade.
It was his power that was most shocking to me. Froch, in theory, was supposed to be the premier fighter in that division for being able to stand and trade and George just walked through him at times. Have you ever seen Carl rocked as much as he was? Understand what you mean about being reactionary etc, but for me that performance was simply stunning. Easy to forget he is only 25 too.
True I agree groves just to wrong for froch. My worry is his stamina but Carl always comes on strong in later rounds and he is natural SMW so retains his power late in fights where I believe groves power and stamina was deterioratin quicker then Carl so stands and trades with Carl in late rounds. One thing I like him to improve is his defence and his inside fighting as that is a extra edge he can gain over other SMW other than ward.
I actually think the rematch be a lot more close. Carl will have tighter defence and groves won't hit him as frequently. I can see groves changing tactics more in rematch boxing more counter punching on back foot waiting for a defensive Carl to initiate attacks and time him with fast hands as Carl comes in as Carl is very open when charging forward. I also expect groves will use the same tactics as he did to see if Carl learnt anything new.
