Who strikes you as a fighter who should be much better known and respected by the general public?
I think Harold Johnson stands out. What a technician!

thousands, literally over the years, thousands...

to think that the 11 listed ranked fighters (Champ & Top 10), sum up the whole boxing world is quite a bit niave really.

Boxing IS Notorious for Corruption, Ducking/Avoidance, Partisanship, Step aside pay-offs and all manner of Skulduggery, it is The Most Crooked Sport in the History of Sport, more than Horse Racing and in recent years Figure Skating LOL.

there have been countless upon countless Contenders and Fringe Contenders that didn't belong to the right people and couldn't get near the champions. This is also greater in numbers at different periods from the sports more superior timess. The most famous probably Charley Burley, but he is not alone. Some of the great historians/researchers on here will provide the names of dozens I'm sure, and IF this thread continues you could end up seeing a couple of hundred names or more listed.

From my 3 homes, Scotland, Canada & England I can think of a few.

    Vic Foley
    Johnny Greco
    Johnny Coulon
    Jackie Callura

    Len Johnson
    Jack Casey
    Tommy Martin
    Eric Boon
    Ernie Roderick
    Ginger Sadd
    Arthur Danahar
    Jackie Brown

    Elky Clark
    Alec Lafferty
    Tommy Milligan
    Jake Kilrain (Scots Welterweight)
    Jim Brady
    Bert Gilroy
    Peter Keenan
    Chic Calderwood
    Cowboy McCormack

Scotland and England had no end of little guys, at one time leading the world for little guys, Canada had all those Montreal fighters of the 30s, 40s and 50s too if my memory is right.

and of course there's the rest of the Boxing world, Auz & New Zealand, Europe & S.Africa, Mexico, Central & S.America (hundreds from there alone), and of course the U S, and all the many different Era's from greatest times to not so great times.

There really have been thousands of great fighters, thousands.

McCallum was so good all round, Dave. A proper, old school fighter.

Who knows how good Sanchez would have become? A wonderful boxer!

In recent times, Brian Mitchell's name is seldom mentioned. You do get Nazarov respect but little is heard of Gregorian.

William Gorilla Jones was called a fighter far superior to Teddy Yarosz by Teddys own Mrg Ray Foutts.
    Thats some praise!

Panama Joe Gans was compared favorably to Sugar Ray Robinson in mid 1940s Ring Magazine articles.
This included the highly esteemed opinion of Dumb Dan Morgan.
Another said both welter champs, Ted Kid Lewis and Jack Britton developed a sudden deafness whenever "Pannys" name was mentioned.

If you're talking about the typical "casual fan", then probably about 98% of fighters who could be called "fantastic". For the general public, the figure is probably around 99.99999%.

Doesn't show on the footage. Yarosz seems way trickier to me. Then again Jones could hold his own against Steele at least twice. That entire MW generation deserves a closer examination really. Brouillard, Overlin, Risko, Apostoli, Hostak,... Damn. Looking back that's quite a roster.
