What do you all think, prime Juan Diaz the one pre Nate Campbell vs current Ruslan Provodnikov?

Diaz has better skills, but Provodnikov would force him into a brawl very early. Siberian Rocky by KO.

Was a pretty big Diaz fan back in the day. That being said Diaz wasn't too terribly hard to hit and could be out muscled. Diaz is the far better inside fighter but just feel like eventually he gets worn down before round 12

He wouldn't have dared. :bart Not even Xplosive.

People forget just how much perceptions of Provodnikov differ now from early '13 and before. "FNF level future gatekeeper, will be lucky to ever get within sniffing distance of a belt" was the universal book on him, by complete acclamation even among those of us who really like him.

A couple of strong performances in '13 have transformed Provodnikov into this head to head monster that he never was before, with people seemingly losing their grasp of the big picture and not placing these performances in context to keep them in appropriate perspective. Bradley could have 120-108'ed Provodnikov in his sleep with a hand tied behind his back. He elected to brawl in a misplaced attempt to regain the hearts and minds of the public. (well, he succeeded to a degree, so misplaced is perhaps the wrong term - but it was ******ed and he shouldn't have done it for the sake of his his long-term career and health)

Then you have Alvarado - who, again, I'm a huge fan of, but who, let's face it, at his best is a B+ product and who came in quite a bit worse for the wear following nineteen rounds of vicious battle with Rios. Very nice win, but it doesn't make Prodovnikov a historical juggernaut and neither does running an intentionally full-****** Bradley very close and dropping (or even nearly stopping) him.

Now, if everybody's short term memory is that bad that it won't even bring them a year back to keep a clear head regarding Provodnikov, you can well imagine that even were they around for Diaz's prime they have likely forgotten exactly how good he was. He was among the hardest-chinned boxers in the sport, and he certainly wasn't going to be laid flat by anything that Mauricio Herrera or Chop-Chop weren't. Yes he could be hit, but his defense was his offense and he would overwhelm Provodnikov enough to render his bombs less effective. I'm not saying he would have put Ruslan on the backfoot or stunned him or anything, as clearly he lacked the power to do that, but he would have stayed in Provodnikov's grill and quieted him up just with endless flurries. Provodnikov is a hard man to hurt, but you can take most of the starch from his offense with a little prestidigitation by simply taking away the play and being the initiator, which Torito had the speed advantage to easily do.

Provodnikov had a fantastic year, I'm stoked for him becoming champ, and boxing needs more like him - but fans are such fickle creatures, so easily carried away based on very little.

    Highly doubt it.

Would you pick Ji Hoon Kim over prime Juan Diaz, too?

...because until last March, that is how Provodnikov was viewed by just about everybody including knowledgeable diehards and people who saw him even before he was an ESPN2 fixture. A guy more or less on Kim's level, or maybe half a tier above.

You're badly mistaken if you think that.

I would have picked Provo to beat down Diaz as soon as I saw him brutally KO Emanuel Augustus.

For the record, I said OVER a year ago that I'd pick Provo to beat Rios if they ever fought, AND I called over a year ago that he would KO a guy like Alvarado.

Just because he was a big underdog against Bradley, doesn't mean I didn't think highly of him. I thought Bradley would soundly outbox him, so I was pleasantly surprised when Provo proved me wrong.

Juan Diaz is nowhere remotely NEAR the level of Bradley, and never was.

He had NO power to deter Provo with, and would get physically mauled by Provo, who's the larger, stronger, FAR more powerful man.

Provodnikov would ko Diaz. Diaz has nothing to keep him off. Diaz basically relied on stamina and throwing a lot of punches to beat his punches. But he doesn't have pop to earn provodnikovs respect. And diaz basically only knows one way to fight. Come foward and throw punches and hopes he wears his opponents out. He's made for provodnikov. There's no way diaz can box him, we've seen him box with malanagi.
